The table represents a skills audit showing in detail my current state of proficiency, desired proficiency level, and the actions necessary to achieve proficiency in four major skills a midwife should have: communication, clinical skills, emotional resilience, and critical thinking/problem-solving. Regarding communication skills, I will be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams by attending specialised workshops, participating in role-playing exercises, and asking for continuous feedback from mentors. The positive feedback during training simulations and alternative motioning will measure my progress (Borrelli, 2014).
I aim to progress from the competencies of basic nursing to mastery of the specific requirements for midwifery. This will be achieved through attending an accredited midwifery program, practical experiences during alternative motioning, and attending other related training on specialized midwifery skills. The success would be considered when all the requirements within the clinical training are achieved and the relevant licenses attained. I will build emotional resilience through attendance in stress management and resilience training programs, practice mindfulness techniques, and seek mentor and peer support. Assessment of my capability to be calm and composed during a high-pressure situation is by supervisor feedback and completion of resilience training programs (Lundgren and Berg, 2007).
Finally, to enhance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, I will participate in case study discussions, attend clinical simulations, and request feedback regarding my approach to decision-making. My progress will be measured by completing problem-based learning activities and receiving positive feedback from clinical supervisors. This will be done systematically, hence enabling me to develop my skills and create a successful career in midwifery that will be capable of offering quality, sensitive care to women and their families during one of the most transitional phases in their lives.
Belbin's Team Roles theory pinpoints nine different roles a person could adopt to become more effective within a team. My strong roles were Resource Investigator, Team worker, and Plant. The above three selected roles therefore highlight my opportunities in exploiting opportunities, encouraging harmony within a team, and putting forward new ideas. With the alternative motioning experience in a reflective light, the framework of Gibbs' Reflective Cycle of 1988 will be applied by looking at some critical points while assessing personal performance based on Belbin's role.
In the alternative motioning, I worked in a local hospital as a midwifery intern, responsible for activities involving pregnancy from prenatal check-ups through labour and delivery. The role involved simple tasks such as vital signs and recording patient information initially; however, my role was becoming increasingly complex, being extended to include conducting prenatal assessment and postpartum care. These include effective communication, clinical skills, emotional resilience, and critical thinking skills. My strengths have included communicating in a manner to shows empathy towards the patients apart from working with the health team. On the contrary, I outlined what I needed to do to develop my clinical skills and emotional resilience skills. These skills also correspond to my Belbin roles: the Resource Investigator role emphasizes communication and networking, the Team worker is seeking collaboration, and the Plant deals with innovative problem-solving (Xu, et al., 2023).
Throughout the alternative motioning, I felt excited, satisfied, shocked, and concerned. Some of the activities were very exciting to be done and satisfying, such as assisting in labour and delivering babies. Shock and concern arose, for instance, in the complications of babies during delivery. The happiest areas of work which came under my traits and roles are direct patient contact and labour. Communication skills, along with the ability to work well with others, helped me through my challenges during alternative motioning. The qualities such as being a good listener and being a team player associated with my Belbin roles helped me greatly in my success (Neeson and Billington, 2022).
Of the three, my communication skills were more significantly enhanced during the placement. One clearly understands that to relate with the patients and their relatives, one has to be clearly and empathetically communicative, which I developed through practice and feedback. Some of my strengths were developing rapport with the patient and good working relationships with other members of the healthcare team. I was aware that a lot more clinical skills were needed to confidently handle some difficult medical situations (Higgins, 2021).
These skills are thus closely related to my Belbin roles: it is in the role of a Resource Investigator that my communicative and networking skills were highly needed to get information and build contacts; being a Team worker allowed smooth interaction within the healthcare team. And of course, the creative part of a thought process is highly requested in those troubled situations that need instant decisions. In the workplace, such skills will no doubt realize quality patient care and smooth working. Indeed, it is quite well documented that good communication is related to improved patient satisfaction and safety, whereas critical thinking involves practising problem-solving repeatedly very useful during the solution of many tough, complex situations in a clinical setting. The competencies listed here will always form the foundation on which I execute empathetic and competent practices in midwifery (Dunne, et al., 2024).
Looking back on my alternative motioning, several incidents, in particular, stood out that I needed to evaluate: incidents that required quick action from me and the need to support the midwife. One such incident has taught me how much further the development of my clinical skills was needed, along with immediate decision-making. Evaluating my approach, I realized that additional training and mentorship would be available. My Belbin's role fitted well with personal and professional development. The Resource Investigator is the role that emphasizes finding opportunities, which goes in line with my desire to pursue further training. The Team worker is a role of collaboration, which goes hand in hand with my aim of working closely with mentors and colleagues to enhance my skills. The Plant role will help me to be creative and find solutions to problems that lie ahead (Oviawe, 2020).

My alternative motioning experiences, combined with the understanding I gained from Belbin's work on roles, are going to shape the path of my future as a professional. Understanding my strengths and areas for development allows me to make choices for career growth. I will try using these communication and teamwork skills while providing compassionate care and contribute toward a supportive environment. Continuous learning and self-improvement will provide the nucleus of my professional growth so that I am abreast with current practices and advancements. Only then will I be prepared to bring positive change in the lives of women and their respective families with the best quality of service during the most transitional phase of their lives, I focus on these aspects in trying to build a successful, meaningful career in health.
