Introduction to Diploma in Health and Social Care Assignment

Task 1

Describe the 2 theoretical perspectives behind research

The conflict perspective is referred to as a social science theory that views society as a dynamic entity that is continuously changing. It emphasizes the distribution of power, resources, and inequality, as well as how these factors influence competition among groups. Conflict theory suggests that society is in a constant state of conflict due to competition for limited resources (Zhang et al., 2020). It analyzes social structures and systems to reveal how power dynamics dictate human relationships and perpetuate divisions within society.

This theory also highlights the impact of unequal distribution of status, wealth, and resources on struggles faced by marginalized groups. For example, leadership plays a vital role in improving patient outcomes, requiring diverse professionals to work collaboratively to ensure quality care. Collaboration among healthcare team members fosters patient safety, with nurse leaders at the core of professional cooperation. Students exploring sociological or healthcare theories can access expert guidance and academic support through Assignment Help UK to enhance their understanding and writing quality.

Conflict theory places the major emphasis on the role of the political action as well as social activism in generating the social change (Usberg et al, 2021). Competition over scarce resources is the fundamental element of the society as well as the driving force of conflict. This competition might occur over the range of resources like power, wealth as well as prestige.

Functionalism theory views the society as a complicated system of the interconnected parts which work together in maintaining the social stability and order. Functionalism focuses on the consensus as well as the order which exists in the society by emphasizing on shared public values as well as social stability. For instance, efficient leaders actively promotes the open communication, create platforms as well as knowledge sharing for various healthcare disciplines working together. This leads to better decision-making as well as enhanced patient outcomes. By handling the competing priorities as well as navigating the complicated situations, an efficient leaders assists in maintaining the stability within the workplace which ensures smooth business operations.

Justify the theoretical perspective chosen to answer your research question

Functionalism is the most suitable approach for the given context. Efficient leaders highlight active engagement with the staff as well as patients with quality care. Participative leaders actively include the team members in the decision making procedure which ensure the range of insights as well as ideas. This lead to informed decisions, sense of ownership as well as responsibility among the team members. Participative leaders actively include the team members within decision making procedure, motivate input as well as value their contributions. This identifies that diverse range of perspectives as well as ideas can lead to enhanced staff engagement. Participative leadership encourages the collaborative team enviornment where the nurses can work together to accomplish the common objectives. Efficient leadership is essential in medicine which promotes the organizational culture in patient safety (Van Keer et al, 2020). They understand the significance of aligning the teams with a common purpose and vision. by promoting the shared sense of vision, nurse leaders motivate the teams to work collaboratively with patients and the community they serve. Leadership is all about promoting a culture of adaptability, collaboration as well as empowerment. Managers ensure everyday operations to run smoothly as leaders are offered with motivation, direction as well as sense of purpose.

By highlighting the genuine care for the patients, these leaders build trust, promote a positive workplace enviornment as well as foster trust. Healthcare organizations prioritize the creation of robust leadership development initiatives which offer mentorship, ongoing training as well as support for emerging leaders. Nursing leadership behavior plays a vital role in shaping the nursing performance, accomplishing organizational goals as well as better patient outcomes. Nursing leadership theories such as transformational and transactional leadership styles have major influence on nurses' burnout, satisfaction as well as resilience.

Efficient leadership is the key to optimizing the abilities of the team members which fosters creativity as well as innovation. Functionalism emphasizes on the nurse leaders working closely with the healthcare professionals to support the healthy workplace enviornment. This assists in ensuring that patient care is offered efficiently as well as effectively. Nurse need to develop their skills and knowledge to keep pace with the changing healthcare atmosphere. Nurse leaders build the knowledge of evidence-based practice in cultivating the broad use of the evidence in the leadership as well as management decision-making (Pérez‐García et al, 2021). Nurses exhibit leadership by taking more accountability to enhance the health care quality as well as patient safety. Collaborative leadership promotes open communication, actively listening to concerns as well as including staff members in decision-making procedures. Nursing leadership is significant in offering high-quality patient care as well as ensure the favorable organizational outcomes.

Evaluate different methodologies used in research

Qualitative research includes collecting as well as analyzing the non-numerical data to analyze opinions, concepts as well as experiences. This research tries to preserve the perspective of participants as well as can be modified as new research questions. The data analysis and collection procedure is adapted as new patterns emerge. Qualitative research methods are designed in the way which assist in revealing the perception as well as behavior of the target audience. There are different types of qualitative research methods like focus groups, in-depth interviews, survey, content analysis as well as case study research.

Qualitative research can assist the nurse leaders to understand the patient experience which can lead to modified care intervention as well as anticipation of issues Kim and Oh, 2020). This can explore the lived experience which offers the insights into the way individuals' experiences, choices as well as options influence their perceptions of skills and knowledge.

On the other hand, quantitative research includes collecting as well as analyzing the numerical data to calculate averages, trends, analyze relations as well as derive the overreaching insights. Qualitative methods complement the qualitative research by emphasizing on non-numerical data which adds more depth to research. Qualitative research mainly emphasizes on the analysis of the numerical information as well as use the of inferential statistics to analyze a conclusion which is extrapolated to a broad population (McGill et al, 2021). Data collected in quantitative research use the structured method which is conducted on the large samples which represent the whole population. The investigator can use the quantitative research method to gather numerical data which is subjected to statistical analysis in evaluating the major findings.

Primary qualitative research is the most used method for carrying out the market research. This emphasizes on collecting data on the basis of data collected from the previously done studies. Secondary quantitative research includes using the already existing data. The main objective of quantitative research is to quantify as well as measure the phenomena by gathering the numerical information (Pursio et al, 2021). This aims to test hypotheses, make patterns as well as generalize findings for the large populations. Investigators can use statistical tests to draw the conclusions as well as make a generalizations on the basis of numerical data. This also includes a large sample size in ensuring statistical generalizability as well as importance. The investigator aims to reduce bias as well as subjectivity emphasizing on objective findings as well as replicable.

In the situation where the researcher aims to reduce bias as well as predict potential conflicts, quantitative research is most suitable. This allows a more thorough comprehension of the subject under the investigation. This is helpful in dealing with complicated research questions which need in-depth numerical analysis. This objectively makes the results fair as well as reliable in various cases which reduce the potential for investigator bias.

In the present research, the investigator has selected qualitative research to analyze the relationship among leadership and patient health in nursing. This will assist the researcher to interpret and understand the human behvaior with data analysis. The researcher has selected survey to analyze the influence of leadership on patients outcomes. this helps in promoting the detailed understading of the human perceptions as well as behavioral traits in the natural enviornment. Qualitative research maintains the respect for an individuality of various idividuals. This also offers researcher with innovative and multiple ways of acquiring the data regarding the study. This is the most efficient method to interpret as well as understand the interactions in the society. This offers an in-depth as well as detailed information regarding the subject by evaluating the ranks as well as counts of the attitudes, feelings as well as behavior (Zhang et al, 2024). This research also stimulated the interdependence as well as interpersonal of the relations among the human beings.

Different data collection methods

For the completion of the research study, there are many different types of methods available for collecting the data. The data is the most crucial aspect required for the accomplishment of the objectives of the study. In case the methods are not appropriate then this will affect the whole study and its successful accomplishment of the objectives (Cui et al, 2023). So there are various kinds of data collection methods available which can be implemented into the working well. In case these methods are not implemented well then the research will not be accomplished appropriately. These methods of collecting the data are as follows-

Primary data collection- this is a type of method which includes gathering data directly from the population. This data must always be first-hand and not have been used in any of the research previously.

Secondary data- this is another source which includes the collection of the data from the existing sources. Here the pre-established data is used which is published somewhere in either the government publications or any of the websites. It is not necessary to have any first-hand data and it does not affect the research result if it is used in any of the studies.

Interview- this is another set of primary data within which the face-to-face interview is taken from the participant (Köhler, Smith and Bhakoo, 2022). Here the researcher themselves ask the questions directly to the participant and all the responses are recorded by them and then analysed.

Survey questionnaire- this is another set of primary methods which includes the collection of the data by sharing the closed-ended questions. The respondent answers these questions by selecting the appropriate type of data and ultimately the overall objective is attained.

In the current study, compliance with all the methods is done except for interviews. The combination of two methods is used that is primary and secondary and within primary, the data is gathered with the help of questionnaire (Strijker, Bosworth and Bouter, 2020). The combination of this method for collecting data was very helpful as it provided with a wider range of data and this was more effective.

Task 1

Chapter One Introduction

Background

Leadership is referred to as the capability of the person with the help of which they are capable of influencing and guiding others to ensure work is done according to the planned objectives. To make the working of the company successful, effective leadership need to be implemented so that the work can be enhanced well. Within the healthcare industry, the leadership needs to be implemented well. In case it is not implemented well then, nurses and other healthcare professionals will not be working well (O'Donovan et al, 2021). Ultimately this will be affecting the overall working of the hospital and all the healthcare setting as well. The present study is based on Nuffield Health which is headquartered in the UK and was established in 1957 and is the UK’s largest healthcare charity. The current project will be working on analysing the effects of leadership on the working of nurses. This will assist in managing the working well and in case leadership is not implemented well then it will be hampering the working of the healthcare setting. So the current study will analyse how the healthcare setting must make the optimum use of different leadership theories and models so that the overall working can be improved.

Statement Problem

In the current environment, if the appropriate directions are not provided to the people then they do not work with efficiency. Thus, as a result of this, the overall working of the place is impacted and better results are not gained. Within the healthcare setting, nurses play a crucial role in managing the work and patient’s health appropriately. Furthermore, the reason that when the effective type of leadership will not be applied then nurses will not be able to work with more efficiency (Akbiyik et al, 2020). With the effective support of leaders, the nurses and other healthcare assistants are in a position to learn much better and ultimately the overall efficiency will be improved. Further, with ineffective leadership the healthcare setting is not able to work better and ultimately the overall capability is affected.

The scope of the current study is very wide as leadership applies to almost every aspect. Whether be it, corporate companies, any kind of industry, banking, retail, healthcare sector and many other different sectors. This is very crucial for the reason that when leadership is applied well then it will improve the working efficiency of the company greatly. So the present study and its findings have a wide range of applications as it will be utilised by any of the industry or the company as well.

Rationale of the Study

In the current competitive environment, to be successful for companies they work optimally so that the overall efficiency is improved. When the leadership is applied well then the company will be in a better position to manage the work. When the leader works properly then the whole working will be improved and companies will be in a position to attain the level of profitability. Thus, the reason for selecting the current research topic is that it will assist in analysing the importance of leadership and how it helps in attaining the objectives well.

Chapter two: Review of Literature

Concept of leadership and its significance

As per the views of Kiwanuka et al, (2021) leadership is defined as the act of guiding and influencing others so that the work of every individual is directed towards the attainment of group goals. When the direction of the employees is towards attaining the goal of the company then automatically the personal goals of the employees are also accomplished. On the other side, Quek et al, (2021) contemplated that within the healthcare sector, the application of effective leadership is very important. This is because of the reason that when effective leadership is applied then the work will be more structured. The reason is that when leaders work with efficiency then it will improve their working capability and a better environment will be created.

Further, Niinihuhta and Häggman‐Laitila, (2022) also acclaimed that when leadership is applied well then the communication between the nurses and patients will be clear. This will assist the leaders in managing the working well and ultimately objectives will be attained better. Moreover, Demirhan, (2020) stated that implementing effective leadership is significant because it improves the relationship between the nurse and patient well and as a result of this the overall working is improved. Along with this, Labrague et al, (2021) contemplated that effective compliance with the leadership will improve the decision-making as well. Thus, as a result of this, the overall management of the healthcare setting will be improved and timely decisions will be taken.

Different models and theories of leadership

Aufegger et al, (2020) outline that to ensure the success of the project, the proper model or theory of leadership must be applied. When the leadership is not appropriate then it will affect the working greatly. By looking at the current dynamic and fast-changing environment, the application of the transformational theory is very necessary (How Transformational Leadership Can Inspire Others, 2024). According to Costello, Rusell and Coventry, (2021) However, the reason that this theory assists in managing and implementing the different types of changes well. In case the changes will not be managed well then it will be affecting the working of the company greatly. Thus Al-Dossary, (2022) supported that when this type of leadership is applied then it motivates the employees to work with more efficiency and try to learn all the different types of the changes and implement them into working.

Further, Dalky, Al-Jaradeen and AbuAlRrub, (2020) also stated that complying with a democratic style of leadership will also be beneficial for the improvement of the healthcare setting. Moreover, the reason that within this style of leadership, the suggestion of employees is also asked at the time of decision-making. Thus, as a result of this employee engagement is increased and ultimately the overall objectives are attained well. Terkamo‐Moisio et al, (2022) also argued that leaders of healthcare must comply with the situational leadership theory. However, within the healthcare sector, many different types of the situation occur and it is not necessary that the leadership style applied in a particular situation will also be helpful in other situations as well. Thus, in such a case, situational leadership must be applied within which the leader can effectively apply the leadership style according to the situation present.

Moreover, Alolayyan et al, (2022) stated that compliance with the coaching model of leadership can also be accessed in the healthcare setting. The coaching model of leadership is the one which assists the leader in identifying the strength of individuals so that it can be appropriately utilised for attaining the group goals. This is very necessary for the reason that in case the nurses and other professionals are provided with clear guidance and coaching then they will be in a position to work better.

Impact of various theories on working efficiency of nurses

On the examination of the different modes and theories, it is clear that it created a positive impact on the working of the healthcare setting. Ronquillo et al, (2021) agreed with this because when effective leadership is applied then nurses will be getting proper direction. Eventually, this will result in the better accomplishment of the objectives and ultimately the overall working capability will be improved. Labrague, (2021) also stated that when leadership is strong then training relating to the latest changes will be provided to them. Thus, as a result of this, the overall development of the employees will take place and it will result in the improvement of better working and ultimately the objectives will be attained well.

Moreover, Khattak et al, (2021) stated that when the leaders are supportive and helpful then nurses and other professionals will be working comfortably. Thus, as a result of this, a better environment and systematic flow of work is present. Thus, as a result of this, the engagement of the nurses with the working of the company is improved well. The reason that when the nurses are satisfied then they will be working well and the resultant outcome will be good.

Chapter Three: Methodology

Data collection

To make the study successful the effective type of data must be collected so that research can be done successfully. It is necessary for the reason that when the effective type of data will be gathered then automatically the overall efficiency will be improved. For this, the data can be collected from two different sources that is primary and secondary source. In the case of primary data, all the information is gathered directly from the source and is not used in any of the previous studies (Lê and Schmid, 2022). On the other side, the secondary source is the one which provides already used data about the research topic. For the current study, the primary and secondary data are used for accomplishing the study well. Also, the primary data was gathered from 30 nurses of Nuffield Health and for secondary data, compliance with different books, journals, articles and others was used.

Data analysis

For the success of the study, the data must be analysed well. In case the collected data is not evaluated and analysed then it will affect the efficiency of the work in a great way. When the data is analysed effectively then the working of the study will be improved well (Hendren et al, 2023). For this, the scholar has applied the thematic analysis and by making different themes and related charts and tables the data has been analysed and research objectives have been attained.

Summary of research process

For the research process, the sample is selected and then the questionnaire will be supplied to them via email and responses will also be gathered from email only. After gathering all the data, the compliance with thematic analysis is done and all the collected data is evaluated. After that, the results are communicated to the intended audience.

Further, there are certain limitations as well which affect the working of the study effectively. The most common type of limitation was less time and this limitation was overcome with help of the effective time management (Vaughn and Jacquez, 2020). Another limitation faced included the less secondary data available relating to the research topic. However, with the application of the effective type of keyword searching, the scholar was able to overcome this issue and was in a better position to collect a wide range of data.

Theme 1: Interpretation: with the analysis of the primary data gathered with the help of the nurses of Nuffield Health, it was evident that effective awareness relating to leadership is present while working. Moreover, for the reason that when the effective type of leadership is employed then it will provide better service and nurses will be much happier.

Theme 2: Interpretation: Further, the analysis of the 30 respondents it clear that the majority of the participants agree that the use of leadership is being done by Nuffield Health. It is the reason that when the effective type of leadership is followed then it will provide a better base to plan for all the activities.

Theme 3: Interpretation: with the evaluation of the results of primary data it is clear that to engage nurses better. As agreed by a majority of the respondents it is clear that the healthcare setting is implementing the working better and ultimately the nurses are highly motivated and engaged with company goals. In support of this Goldsby et al, (2020) states that when the nurses are more engaged with the company then they will work with more proficiency.

Theme 4: Interpretation: On the analysis of the data, it is clear that leadership is very important for the successful management of a healthcare setting. As per the views of the majority of people, proper direction and structuring of work and workplace relations and coordination are improved (Parr, Teo and Koziol‐McLain, 2021). Furthermore, the reason that when the effective type of leadership is applied then it provides a clear structure of working and ultimately the work is improved. Thereafter, when the leader is effective then better environment will be created and also there will be more coordination among the nurses and other employees.

Theme 5: Interpretation: by evaluating the gathered data it is clear that with the application of a good leadership style, the company is in a position to implement a good leadership style. This is good for the reason that when an effective type of leadership style is implemented then it enhances the working well (Malinowska-Lipień et al, 2021).

Theme 6: Interpretation: the views of the majority of the participants stated that there is an application of the different types of leadership theories and models. All of the above is the most common type of theory or model of leadership which is applied. It includes different theories like transformational, democratic, situational leadership and the coaching mode. According to Kirkpatrick, Altanlar and Veronesi, (2024) all these different types of leadership styles are helpful to healthcare settings in ensuring that all the changes are implemented and nurses are managed well so that the objective of the company can be attained well.

Theme 7: Interpretation: on the examination of the data, it is clear that effective compliance with the leadership helps in creating a positive impact on the working of the healthcare setting. When the directions are provided effectively then it will impact the overall efficiency and nurses will be performing their job effectively.

Theme 8: Interpretation: Through the analysis of the primary data it is clear that many positive effects are created with help of the effective leadership. The most commonly agreed by a majority of the people includes better patient outcomes and improved engagement of employees. Both these are the major impact which is enjoyed by nurses and healthcare settings. In support of this George et al, (2023) states that when proper leadership is employed then it creates a better working environment and ultimately the objectives of the healthcare setting are attained well.

King et al, (2021) also states that when the appropriate type of leadership is employed by healthcare then they are in a better position to work. Also, Lee et al, (2021) contended that when effective leadership theories like democratic, transformational, coaching models and many other different types of theories and models are applied then a better environment can be developed. This is because of the reason that these theories and models help Nuffield Health in managing and keeping the nurses and other employees motivated.

It was examined that the application of leadership theories like transformational, democratic, coaching models and others help keep the nurses more engaged with the working and operational efficiency. Thus, the effective application of the leadership models and theory is very helpful in managing and mitigating the working and ultimately the overall working is improved.
