Literature Review And Research Gap

Concept of leadership and its significance in project success

In the context of project management, leadership is defined as managing and directing the project as well as the people who are included in project in order to deliver the positive outcomes. As per the view of Gemino, Horner Reich and Serrador (2021), effective leadership is important because it helps in motivating team, ensures clear communication, builds trust & collaboration as well as facilitates decision-making and drives accountability which eventually positively impacts on project success. In the construction sector, the leaders are accountable to motivate and inspire the team members to give their best efforts and performance (Tagscherer and Carbon, 2023). This helps in promoting the collaborative and positive culture as well as dedication and enthusiasm which eventually negatively influence on project success. On the critical note, it has been argued by Zhao, Fan and Chen (2021), in some cases the leaders are providing unclear direction to the team members that lead to lack of coordination, confusion and diminishing the cohesion which eventually negatively influence on project success. As critically contended by Fareed et al, (2022) leaders play a crucial role in adopting the changing circumstances and encouraging the flexibility culture. By this, team members get motivated to adopt creative solutions for completing the project in a successful manner.

Theoretical underpinnings of leadership and team performance

To improve the performance of team members and gain success of projects the leaders are emphasising on implementing the various leadership theories such as transformational, coaching, situational, servant etc. As critically contended by Rahmani, et al, (2022) transformational is considered as one of the critical leadership style that implemented by the leader of construction sector for the success of project. This leadership theory or style is inspirational and visionary approach that aims to create lasting and positive change in the stakeholders and project team. As per the view of Wuryania et al (2021) situational leadership is another style that is implement by the companies for the process success. This leadership style helps in managing the situation by developing stronger team and creating positive environment from which members feel encourage to giving best performance. On the other hand, according to Aguilar et al, (2023), to improve the performance of team members the leaders are emphasis on implementing Belbin team roles. As per this model, the team members are resource investigator, co-ordinator, implementer etc., from which they are performing their roles and responsibilities to complete the project in successful manner. For improving team performance and achieving success of process, adoption of Belbin model is beneficial because it helps in increase productivity and greater team collaboration (Arbinger institute, 2025).

Relationship between project leadership and team performance within construction sector

In the construction sector, the leadership has direct relationships with the performance of the team members. According to Montenegro et al, (2021) leaders are playing crucial role in nurturing the mindset of the team members from which they are competent to think creative and innovative ideas for the completion of project in successful manner. Imam and Zaheer (2021) investigated that effective leadership helps in setting the goals and targets as well as managing the people which improves team performance. Additionally, the leadership helps in promoting the culture that fosters trust, accountability and productive as well as conflict resolution and collaboration which leads to strengthen relationships among team members. On the critical note, author said that Gemino, et al, (2021), in some cases, leaders are fail to provide proper supervision and direction to the workers from which they feel de-motivated to give better performance which eventually negatively influence on the overall success of project. Stanitsas, Kirytopoulos and Leopoulos (2021) identified in their study that the high-performing teams are develop on the authentic relationships and it helps in improving their performance by improving the collaboration and knowledge sharing which eventually positively impacts on the success of project.

Qualitative type includes gathering of non-numerical data which emphasises on understanding the opinion and experience associated with the research issue being investigated. On the other side, quantitative research tends to make focus on the collection and evaluation of the numerical data (Chalmers and Cowdell, 2021). To evaluate the relationship between project leadership style and team performance within the construction industry qualitative research will be initiated. Moreover, qualitative research aids in gaining in-depth understanding of the research topic and allows in assessing the uncover trends and patterns that could be missed within the quantitative study.

Research Approach

Research approaches can be distinguished into two such as deductive and inductive. It specifies the pattern which will be followed for the purpose of data gathering and analysis. Inductive approach consists for developing theories based on observation whereas deductive approach is a top-down method that starts with theory and then test it via observations. In the context of the research study, to address qualitative research aspects inductive approach will be undertaken. The rationale behind the selection of inductive approach is that it highly suits to the qualitative research type. On the basis of this, new theoretical framework will be drafted by evaluating all the observations associated with the leadership and team performance.

Research Philosophy

In research, philosophy may be defined as a belief regarding the way in which data concerning the phenomenon should be collected, evaluated and used (De Paoli, 2024). Positivism and interpretivism are the two kinds of research philosophy that considered by the scholar for meeting the research objectives. Thus, for analysing relationship between leadership and team performance interpretivism philosophy will be used. By interpreting qualitative aspects related to leadership and related factors research objectives will be evaluated.
