Self-reflection refers to the procedure of evaluating thoughts, actions and feelings to get insight from past experiences and promote personal development. I also believe that self-reflection is the most important process especially for the students so that they can improve their learning by comparing it to the past situation. Here I presented a reflection on my own learning and development gained during one year in university. Gibb’s reflective model will be utilised which involve six different stages to present the reflection. It involves description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan (BiteSize Learning, 2025).

Development during the semester

I am student and I always focus on the different ways to improve my learning and growth in my educational life. When I took admission in the university, I did not know about many skills and knowledge, at the beginning of the semester I was highly frightened by college and felt worried that I would not be capable enough to perform as well in university as I did in my school. I identified that college life was quite different from school life and things would be more difficult for me. However, after the first month of college, I started to reduce my worries and anxiety and felt quite satisfied with the college environment. I never missed any class in my first semester which helped me to gain new knowledge and facts regarding my subject. At the starting of first semester, I felt difficulties in communicating with other students and teachers as it was quite new experience for me. I worked on my communication skills and gradually I overcame my fear and started to interact with my educators and peers (Sari, 2023). Before joining college, I highly dependent on others include my teachers, family members and friends. Nevertheless, during semester 1, I learned a lot of things and performed many assignments & projects at my own level. It helped me to become independent and now I can no longer depend on others.

New insights gained over a year

Semester 1 was a gigantic wake-up call for me and it provided a lot of chances for the development. I attended all classes regularly and took part in each classroom activity to enhance my knowledge and abilities. By joining the different learning activities, projects and assignments, I became more confident and I have learned to trust on my opinions & thoughts. Moreover, I choose things and activities that took me out of my comfort zone and think out of the box. I used my critical thinking skills to find out the different solutions of the problems. I always tried to find creative and unique ideas to solve the tasks in a different way. I used the learning theory such as; Constructivism that highlights the dynamic role of learners in assembling their own abilities and knowledge by communication and interaction (Efgivia et al, 2021). When I worked in a group, I used the theory to interact with other students and learn things by doing the same. During the year, I came to know that time management is one of the most crucial skills for the students. Without managing time effectively and properly, an individual could not be able to complete work on time. As I attended classes, projects and other activities on regular basis, my time management skills have enhanced significantly and helped me to complete my projects on time.

Interpersonal skills developed in university

Throughout a year, I have developed valuable interpersonal skills which are given below:

  • Communication skills: During semester, I got several chances to work with my class mates teachers. During project, I interacted with my mentor and team members to share my creative ideas and opinions to complete activities.
  • Active listening skills: I have learned in my university that active listening is crucial skills for students (Tabieh et al, 2021). When I shared information and ideas with the team members they actively listen to me.

Similarly, I also showed respect to others while group working when they express own opinions and thoughts. I am become more conscious now regarding way I talk and how I articulate responses.

Barriers faced in learning

Throughout year, I faced many challenges and barriers that affected my learning. At starting I felt little difficulties to interact with others and was not able to express my own opinions. However, after that I took guidance from my mentor and tried to interact more with others that helped me to enhance my communication skills. I felt difficulties in managing my time when I had to solve difficult tasks and it impacted my learning highly (Wolters and Brady, 2021). To improve the time management skills, I read books and learn different ways to manage time. There have been many times when I was struggling with controlling own emotions which affected my overall growth. After that I joined the skill development classes which enable me to learn how to manage own emotions and understand other’s feelings.

Strengths and areas of improvements

Critical-thinking skills: While performing different learning based activities and extra-curricular activities, I have identified that critical thinking is my major strength. I actively engaged in procedure of analysing, examining and synthesising information (Razak et al, 2022). I considered all aspects before making any decisions or judgement.

Teamwork is another strength that helped me to complete team project on time. In team project, I performed well and use different ways to solve tasks accurately that facilitated to accomplish common goals.

During semester I identified few areas in which I need improvement to achieve better grades in university. I want to develop my digital literacy as I found that I have not much knowledge regarding technology and it uses. Further, I want to enhance my research skills so that I can become excellent in searching, examining and utilising information from multiple sources (Banu et al, 2022). Moreover, I realised that I required to develop my academic writing skills so that I can prepare more effective reports, essays and assignments in my college. I want to improve my public speaking skills so that I can more confidently express my views and opinions in front of other people.

Utilisation of new insights

I will utilise my skills, knowledge and learning which I gained throughout year in future. I will use my skills and abilities to complete academic projects like essays, research projects, reports and other kind of projects. Because of my team work ability, I can lead team in university very well. I believe that my excellent team work abilities will help me in my future study when I work with team members with different background. I will use my communication skills to ask doubts and queries to teacher (Dumulescu, Pop-Păcurar and Necula, 2021). Due to my good critical thinking skills, I can perform the complex tasks without any difficulties and get good marks in exam. Digital skills and research abilities will help me to use online resources efficiently to di my study. Communication skill will also allow me to participate in different learning activities like debate and confidently put my opinions in front of others.

As I have little knowledge about digital skills so, I will start from basic concepts to make this goal achievable. The course will facilitate me to do different projects by using technical software and tools. It will help me to do my project before time. I will complete the online course within 6 months.
I will improve my research skills to improve my learning. I will join workshops and training programs and join team-building activities. The goal is attainable for me because I have good command on critical thinking which help me to gain research skills. By improving research abilities, I can collect more accurate information regarding particular topic. To learn research skills, I will take 4 months.
I want to enhance my academic writing skills. I will join coaching and choose mentor who will guide and assist me to improve my writing skills (Utami and Winarni, 2023). It is achievable for me as I have done academic projects in my college and school. So, my prior knowledge will help me to achieve goal. Academic writing skills will be useful for me to write existing information as well as my own ideas in better way by following proper grammar, vocabulary etc. I will complete the coaching within 3 months.
I wish to develop public speaking ability. I will attend the skill development class and join social events to learn how to speak in public. Social gatherings will allow me to meet people with different background and reduce my fear of public speaking. I have developed my communication skills during semester that can be helpful for me to accomplish goal of improving public speaking ability. Public speaking skill will facilitate me to enhance my personal and professional growth. It will allow me to communicate more clearly to peers and teachers in the university. I will learn public speaking skills in next two months.
