CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Leadership styles means a way in which employers, executives and business leaders set the directions for their followers (Martínez-Arvizu et al, 2025). Different leadership style have distinct application that works based on organisation culture and leaves a significant impact across company. In healthcare setting leadership plays a vital role in managing workplace culture and operating in a way that improvised overall health outcomes of the patient. Effectiveness in leadership leads to improvised health care delivery, better patient response, job satisfaction and maximum retention of health care employees (Khalis et al, 2025). Leadership style also have greater impact over nurse’s burnouts, their wellbeing in organisation. Current research project is based on NHS UK a healthcare organisation that specialises in offering range of healthcare related services to the patients. Organisation is publically funded and aims for delivering better quality services that contributes towards positive health outcomes of patients.

Similarly, data analysis is also going to be evaluate in order to accomplish overall aim of study.
Research aim
The aim of the study is to explore different leadership styles and their impact on nurse burnouts and their workplace wellbeing in context of NHS UK.
Problem statement
Burnouts in healthcare sector is common because of heavy workloads, long hour’s duties, and absence of flexibility that cause burnouts among healthcare staff (Fayyaz and Majeed, 2025). Excessive workloads, poor leadership, negative culture, lack of support affects wellbeing of nurses that further results into their exit from organisation. Nurse’s burnout negatively affect patient’s health and overall impact their ability to deliver services to patients. Fatigued nurses also struggles with sleep and struggles with concentration possibly leads to enhanced medical errors. Therefore, it is resulting as a critical condition for a healthcare sector, thus current project is aiming to discuss this problem in depth manner and provides solutions to fix this problem.
Objective of the study
- To comprehend the concept of leadership style and its role in healthcare setting.
- To examine different leadership style and its impact on nurse burnouts and their wellbeing in healthcare organisation.
- To understand the ways of positive leadership style that promotes nurses wellbeing and reduces their burnouts for better patient health outcomes.
- To suggest suitable leadership style to NHS UK in order to prevent nurses’ burnout and maintaining positive work-culture to ensure better health care services delivered to patients.
Research question
Q 1: What is concept of leadership styles and its role in healthcare setting?
Q 2: What are some leadership styles and how it affects nurse burnouts and their wellbeing’s in healthcare firms?
Q 3: How leadership style contributes towards nurse’s wellbeing and decreased burnouts that improvises patient’s care?
Q 4: How leadership style helps NHS UK to avoid nurse’s burnout and maintain positive work culture for improvised healthcare services offered to patients?
Theoretical framework
A systematic review of the theories being employed in project, it helps in outlining key theories that is relevant to research topic. The theoretical diagram of present project highlights leadership styles and its potential influence on job satisfaction of nurse.
Conceptual framework
A visual representation that act as a map assisting researcher in managing their thoughts and examining study scope for the research process (Chakkaravarthy and Bhaumik, 2025). Below conceptual framework is entailing concepts of the project that has been going to evaluate in a manner that helps in drawing conclusion of the study.
Scope of the study
Scope of the current project is wide as it is aiming to analyse the role of different leadership style and its influence over nurse’s burnouts and their wellbeing within healthcare and social care sector. The scope of project also entails the way effective leadership style advances clinical culture and promoting operational excellence in healthcare organisation (Song et al, 2025). This involves examining different leadership approaches and their application, assessing their influence over nurse’s job satisfaction, work-load management, exit intention and quality services for patient.
Definitions of terms
The term leadership styles are going to be used thoroughly in research project, it is a leader’s ability in leading team, this term has different approaches which is going to be specify in terms of Nurses wellbeing within healthcare setting. Another term used is nurse burnouts which means emotional, physical and mental exhaustion with the job caused by unsupported work culture, stressful and unmanageable system leads to burnouts among nurses (Longhini et al, 2025). Nurse’s wellbeing is also a term that has been used which means professional satisfaction, team engagement, physical and mental happiness that helps nurses to perform their duty well (Dovepress, 2025). Patient health outcomes, health services, workload management and job satisfaction are another terms which has been used in this project to develop understanding in aim and reaching to project’s conclusion.
Significance of the study
The current research study is beneficial for the healthcare organisation in order to adjust their leadership style and cultivate positive work environment. Study is going to present information about nurse’s wellbeing and their work life balance through positive leadership style, this helps in managing their hectic schedule and reducing possible burnouts (Barr, 2025). Information related to leadership style going to help NHS to address its workplace issues and provide a safer culture to all medical staff and possibly reduces their disengagement with work. Additionally, this study is going to help fellow researchers who are conducting study across this field, as they can be able to view data from the project and reach to their research conclusion.
CHAPTER 2- REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Introduction
A literature review is the systematic analysis of the resources available that helps in addressing research problem. In this particular chapter themes based information and critical analysis is going to be made in context of leadership styles and their role, impact on nurse burnouts in healthcare.
Theme 1: Understanding concept of leadership style and its role in healthcare
According to the view of Lenssen et al, (2025) leadership style plays a vital role in healthcare setting as it streamlines medical interventions and enhances healthcare outcomes. Leadership styles drives staff behaviour, organisational culture and quality care of patient. Healthcare leadership is not only about maintaining the work culture but also to find the challenges underlying in system and fixing those in timely manner. Great leaders are those who facilitate communication within culture and boost efficiency that is critical to better patient care. However, Bernal and Sherman, (2025) said that leaders should not only focus on finding and fixing the issue but also to manage workloads, staff satisfaction and their experiences within the organisation, as managing all these improvises health outcomes of the patient.
da Silva, Hammett and Low, (2025) stated that effective leadership is linked with improvised health outcomes of patient and act as an integral part of the system. For instance if a healthcare team looks disoriented, unfocused then it also turns out into a life threatening situation for the patient. Therefore, leadership is crucial in healthcare to make team encouraged and focused in their work and deliver best services to patient and improvise their health outcomes. On the other hand Svensson and von Knorring, (2025) outline that poor leadership in healthcare causes significant issues including nurse burnout, lack of motivation, declining in quality services. When staffs in healthcare seems disengaged, fatigued, unfocused then it negatively influences services delivered to patient. Further, ineffectiveness in leadership sometimes also extends to negative reputation of healthcare firm, financial stability as well as compromises ability of retaining and recruiting talented staff.
Theme 2: Different leadership style and its influence on nurse burnouts and their wellbeing
As per the view of Baum et al, (2025) there are different leadership style practiced in healthcare organisations and have potential impact over staffs and patient care. Democratic leadership have significant influence over employee wellbeing in healthcare sector, as it promotes collaboration among nurses and fuels team success. This particular style encourages open discussion, cultivate supportive culture that leads to enhanced job satisfaction and avoids negative impact of burnouts. However, Bradford and Burrell, (2025) stated that democratic style can result into burnout for the leaders as constant requirement to maintain inclusivity in decision process somehow results in pressured situation that delays whole decision process. In addition to this Rodrigues et al, (2025) stated that, due to delay in decision because of democratic style, most of the leaders pursue transformational leadership which has positive influence over minimising nurse burnout. Transformational leaders tends to be more consistent and active than democratic which led them to create a culture that boosts nurses job satisfaction, mental and physical wellbeing leading to better healthcare services.
As per critics Hassan and Elsayed, (2025) specified that transformation leadership may have positive impact on nurse burnout but it also contributes to negative burnout of staff under some circumstances, as its downside involves extreme workloads for staff, emotional exhaustion leading to job dissatisfaction and potentially results into their turnover with organisation. Thus, situational leadership can be significant in healthcare, Evans, (2025) suggested that this leadership style helps in providing support to nurses and it cultivates a supportive culture that eliminates burnout and promotes wellbeing of staff. In contradict with above point Fang, Hsiao and Fang, (2025) specified that situation leadership is all about adjusting leadership with situations that may contributes to confusion among teams, failed in providing supportive environment that sometimes results into enhanced stress and burnout situation for the nurses.
Further, Navas-Jiménez et al, (2025) detailed that some of the clinical leaders also pursue transaction style that emphasise on rules-regulations, appreciation and punishment that have mixed influence over nurses burnouts. Other than this autocratic leadership also have negative impact over nurse burnout as it leads to lower nurse morale, job dissatisfaction, potentially results into nurse’s burnout. Conversely, Musio et al, (2025) said that autocratic may have devastating impact on nurse’s wellbeing but it promotes quick decision response that is critical to patient outcomes. Thus adjusting this style would result in staff wellbeing as well.
Theme 3: Positive leadership style that encourages nurses wellbeing and reduces their burnouts leading to efficient patient health results
From the view point of Zhang et al, (2025) leaders in every sector requires to promote a supportive work culture that boosts open communication, provides peer supports helps nurses feel more confident and cooperated in their job. For instance engaging leader at workplace always tries to engage with their team members, listens to their concerns and providing them solutions to ensure their better experience. In such case patient’s health outcomes also seems to be improved and whole organisational culture remain positive. In opposition, Haile et al, (2025) detailed that due to time limit in clinical setting it is often difficult for the leaders to contact with each member individually, this may result in conflict among staff as other’s concern has been heard and others have not got chance to have one on one session with leaders.
However, Shaban et al, (2025) detailed that it is not only about team engagement but leader should also focus on setting individual goals for each team members and promote communication, encourage open discussion helps in making each member feels valued and respected. When nurse’s concerns are being heard and their work is being rewarded or appreciated then it minimises their burnouts that results into best clinical services delivered to patient improvising health outcomes.
Conclusion
It has been summarised from above LR chapter that leadership is critical to clinical success, leading in right direction while managing employee wellbeing results into their job satisfaction that reduces burnouts and leads to best medical care for patients.
CHAPTER 3- RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Introduction
Research methodology chapter entails way of collecting and evaluating a data in a manner that helps in drawing conclusion of the study. To analyse leadership’s impact over nurse burnouts and wellbeing both primary and secondary data is being utilised with the help of suitable methods.
Data collection
A process of collecting data that shapes further research known as data collection method, it plays a significant role in collecting data from the sources in order to complete research (Romão et al, 2025). Data can be gathered through two main methods that are primary and secondary, in primary source data is being collected through interviews, surveys, focus group observation while in secondary data is being collected through websites, scholars articles etc. In context of the current research study the data is being gathered from both primary and secondary method, the reason why both method is being used is to improvise overall readability and quality of the study. The data is being gathered from relevant sources using qualitative approach, this particular method is being used in order to collect more meaningful data about nurse burnouts and their wellbeing within healthcare organisation (Batran et al, 2025). For the primary data survey is being conducted with key respondents from clinical organisation.
Simple random sampling is being utilised in order to select sample size, the only reason is to consider this method is to give everyone an equal chance to speak up so that different views can be captured that aids on data relevancy (Brady et al, 2025). Therefore, 15 nursing staff and nurse managers are randomly selected for the survey process in order to obtain their view about burnouts and staff wellbeing in healthcare organisation. To smoothen research process, analyst have already ensure to obtain consent from participants in order to avoid any issue during survey. The questionnaire method is being selected for survey as researcher has prepared both close ended and open ended questions to ask participants about how they feel under certain leadership style and how it affects their burnouts and wellbeing.
To maintain ethics in research analyst have ensured to meet all rules and regulation required for conducting survey, also consent has been obtained from the staff selected from NHS UK, to avoid any delay researcher have already seek consent from organisation related to participation of their staff in survey process (Chen et al, 2025). Further, analyst have ensured to maintain data anonymity to hide personal details of the participants so that they can share relevant information related to topic. Regarding secondary data collection, relevant articles has been selected in order to maintain project’s reliability. Researcher have focused on only those articles that has been properly cited, consists of reliable information, scholars view etc. also analyst have focused on selecting only those resources that consists of right and up to date information about leadership styles and its role in clinical setting (Abdelaliem et al, 2025). Analyst have selected resources by keeping thing in mind to avoid those resources which consists of old information, no citations and oblique information. Also, analyst have avoided those articles which have not been published from relevant sites. Thus, only relevant and published articles which are not old than 5 years are being selected and utilised. Further, secondary data is being organised in a thematic manner to develop better understanding about data.
Data analysis
A process of exploring and analysing collected data in order to address underlying problem, in a research data analysis plays a vital role in obtaining result from the collected data through different analysis approach (Navas-Jiménez et al, 2025). It can be done in two ways one is statistical way and other is thematic way, for the current study thematic approach is being utilised in order to arrange data in themes and applying analysis approach to draw result. The reason why statistical approach is rejected because it is associated with quantitative study and concerns with numerical data which is not possible in this case, as study is qualitative based and have sourced non-numeric data. The data about leadership styles and its potential influence over nurse’s burnouts and wellbeing is being analysed with the help of thematic approach.
Thematic approach is helpful in gaining better insight about the data, while also supports in understanding perceptions of participants which leads to conclude findings efficiently (Abdulmohdi and Huang, 2025). This approach works by arranging data in a systematic thematic forms and finding recurring themes that answers suitable research questions. Thus, analyst have organised data in a themes form that address each research question about nursing leadership and its impact over nurse burnout and their job satisfaction, wellbeing within healthcare sector. Further to develop better understanding in research, chart representation has been followed to present data in understandable form (Džambić and Hadziahmetovic, 2025). Each chart comprise of information based on the question asked in survey process and being represented in a chart form along with key interpretation. The interpretation of questions is being done in a manner that answers the research question thoroughly and helps in reaching final conclusion of the study. Additionally, analyst have undertaken all ethics related to data analysis, proper transparency, fairness, accountability principles have maintained throughout this process.
Conclusion
Above chapter have summarised key research approaches required to complete project in well-structured manner. Qualitative primary and secondary data helps in getting better information about research topic, while thematic approach and survey method helps in analysing useful data about leadership role in healthcare organisations and its possible impact on staff wellbeing.

Research findings
Findings from the data suggests that burnouts among nurses is potentially impacted by different leadership styles. Appropriate leadership style positively influences nurse burnout as it minimises it and leading to maximum job satisfaction (Alsadaan et al, 2023). It has been evaluated that democratic leadership have proven better result in nursing setting as it facilitate and enhances nurses performance that is essential for ensuring quality care delivered to patient. However, it is also emerged from the data that transformational leadership helps nurses in outperforming their performances and overall expectations also it tends to result into higher morale among nursing staff (DaVinci et al, 2025).
It is also evaluated from the data that leadership styles like autocratic negatively influences nurse burnout as autocratic leader seem to be stricter and fails in managing wellbeing of nurses (National library of medicine, 2025). In such cases, nurses turnover can be seen commonly, however to avoid such type of situation healthcare organisations always focuses on practicing leadership that promotes their employee wellbeing (Kamath, 2025). For instance NHS is leading healthcare organisation in UK, they ensures their staff wellbeing and also provides them continuous growth opportunity that ensures their retention with firm, that is why organisation is able to provide better care services to its patients.
Summary of the research process
The research process has summarised information related to leadership styles and its potential influence over nurse wellbeing and their burnouts. Related to this qualitative approach has been utilised in collecting both primary and secondary data to address research questions cohesively. Suitable questionnaire survey method is being used to obtain the views of respondents about research cause and draws conclusion accordingly.
Critique of the process and limitations of the project
Overall the project has been completed in its stipulated time frame. However, there were some limitations occurred during project that has impact work, for instance due to time constraint smaller sample size for the survey has been considered that has posed data insufficiency problem (da Silva, 2025). However, analyst have decided to evaluate present available resource in a manner that answers research questions. Another limitation occurred was budget constrain due to limitation in budget, few articles has been selected for the project. However, analyst have ensured to meet all criteria and have selected only those articles that are peer reviewed and cited.
Conclusion
From the above research project it has been concluded that applying different applications to leadership styles helps in improvising work place culture within clinical setting. Above research has aimed for analysing leadership role and its impact over nurse burnouts. Qualitative study is being conducted to organise primary and secondary data in a thematic manner that address all research questions carefully. Survey method is also being followed in research with questionnaire approach along with data findings. Lastly research limitations, summary of project is being highlighted in project.
