ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

This assignment is designed to help you focus your study as early as possible. You will present an outline proposal for the study in which you will clearly identify the topic to be studied, the methodologies you propose to use and at least one additional learning outcome that you hope to meet whist engaged in the study.

The proposal will also review your developmental process in terms of selecting your study so, for example, you might indicate what your initial idea was, how you went about selecting and rejecting ideas and how you decided upon the final idea. You should refer to relevant literature in your work.

The total number of words allowed is 1000 (with a 10% leeway).

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Knowledge

  • Critical understanding and specialised knowledge in their area of study
  • Critical understanding of a key aspect of teaching and learning within your subject/age phase.
  • In addition to the above generic learning outcomes, students will negotiate with their university tutor and/or subject advisor specific learning outcome(s) that may demonstrate unique knowledge explored in their own project. These specific learning outcomes will be stated in the project proposal.

Skills

  • Identify and negotiate a research project and take responsibility for constructing and achieving relevant additional outcomes and critically evaluate the results of theproject
  • Employ highly specialised and advanced research skills and tools relevant to the study
  • Employ high level practitioner research/action research skills

ETHICAL GUIDELINES

Access to children, teachers, parents or any school personnel normally must be approached through the head teacher.

If students want to carry out research with children they must consult the head teacher or line manager as to whether they need to write to the parents for permission. The school may prefer to do this rather than allow the student to do it.

Students must submit their research proposal to their tutor prior to commencing the research. This proposal must include reference to any ethical issues and how these will be dealt with, details of the data collection including interview questions, observation techniques, questionnaires, etc.

Students may want to use video and photographs to carry out their data collection. Whilst this can be a very productive source of data these two devices are beset with ethical problems. They are also extremely time consuming to analyse. Tutors must be involved in the discussion about whether or not to allow students to use these means of data collection and all ethical issues must be thoroughly considered.

The tutor will indicate if the proposal is approved before the student can commence the work. This approval will indicate ethical approval and the tutor’s responsibility for ethical standards being maintained.

The BERA Ethical Guidelines (2018) are available to download in the module space. Trainees are required to read these. Submission of this proposal form indicates that students have read and understood these guidelines.

1) Give a brief description of the area on which you are to focus for the study.

Here you can articulate the overall area that will be the focus for this study. You may also wish to briefly outline any first phases you are going to conduct or have conducted already.
The chosen topic is differentiation teaching which means curating lessons based on the process of teaching, content to be taught, or the outcome to achieve from students. Differentiation teaching focuses on the individualistic needs of the student (Stevens-Smith, 2020). Different students have different pace of learning that makes it imperative for the teacher to adopt a different style of teaching based on the three elements of curating the lesson mentioned above. The focus is to impart knowledge that helps the student to grow and develop in a conducive environment (Lindner and Schwab, 2020). The first phase of conducting a research is to plan and form a research design to aid collection of data and its analysis. It will keep the whole study on the right track and minimize wastage of resources (Stevens-Smith, 2020). I have collected information on the topic that implies that the topic has abundant resources to collect data and scholars have provided many different perspectives about the impact of differentiation teaching methods. I have gone through child psychology and how different teaching styles impact their understanding to ensure that I have enough resources to evaluate the matter.

2) Give a brief account of how and why you have come to the conclusion that you should concentrate on this area of study. How does this link with your own professional practice? How will engaging in this study enhance your professional practice?

Here you can engage with the background to your study and explain the reasoning behind your choice of topic for this study. You should also consider how this will improve your professional practice as a teacher.
I chose this topic of differentiation teaching based on an individual's needs and wants because this area has wide scope for betterment. While most of the classes are taking place virtually, it has become difficult for teachers to acknowledge their needs and expectations from their learning journey (Stevens-Smith, 2020). As teachers play a vital role in imparting knowledge, they ought to know the pace and perception of students before they teach. Subjects like Moral science and art are not considered important and subjects like math and science are perceived as boring by them. To increase engagement and simultaneously meet the goal of development, this topic can provide useful insights. I think that teachers share the direct connection with students and the administration so it is their responsibility to understand the needs of students and make education more impactful rather than just a means to facilitate information. When students engage holistically in class, a teacher learns about their interests and what makes them remember better and what kind of learning style they follow. As a teacher, I think this topic will vividly enhance my engagement with students and will also make my service more impactful. As a service provider, I have a responsibility to develop a pool of positive, productive, and determined human resources.

3) What is your initial research idea, question or hypothesis?

Here you should articulate an initial question or hypothesis for your study.
The initial research idea is to ascertain the impact of differentiation teaching on development of individuals. The research question is “how does curating lessons based on process, outcome and content aids development and learning of students?

4) What model(s) and methods do you propose to employ for this study and why?

Here you should engage with the methods that you propose to use to collect data
on your study. You can also reiterate any structures or cycles that will take place in your research. Try to indicate at least your first intended cycle in this section.

The research design is deductive and therefore the topic is known and we have to find out to what extent differentiation teaching gives favorable results. For this research, the data will be collected by using both primary and secondary data resources. For collecting primary data, surveys of teachers will be conducted and for secondary data, journal articles and published documents will be used from authentic and reliable websites (Lindner and Schwab, 2020). The research cycle will consist of 7 steps, identifying the topic, conducting preliminary search for information, locating material, evaluating sources, making notes, writing the paper, citing the sources, and proofreading the paper. The research will include descriptive analysis of the observational data (Stevens-Smith, 2020). For reviewing the literature of scholars, articles not older than 2015 will be used to attain high reliability. It will also include the element of online teaching and how differentiation teaching can be applied and how it impacts the students in remote settings (Rashidov, 2020).

5) In addition to the learning outcomes already stated for this module, what other learning outcomes will the study enable you to meet? You should propose at least one additional learning outcome.

This is a learning outcome for YOU, not for your pupils, so you may consider beginning it with something like: “By the end of this module I will have a critical understanding of…….” Additional learning outcome(s):
With the completion of this study, I will be enabled with wisdom and critical thinking about the practice of use of differentiation teaching and how I should address different needs of students. This will also help me to choose the most appropriate alternative of curating lessons and adopting the most impactful teaching mode (Pozas, Letzel, and Schneider, 2020). I will become more flexible in teaching and also become more patient. I need to be cautious about what I am teaching and how I am delivering my speech that is clearly audible and engaging. This will help me to understand a child's psychology and what things motivates them to make them stick with the content. I will become solution-oriented as I will thrive to make students develop their own thinking skills and bring about the best change in them regarding perceiving their knowledge, information, and their surroundings (Lindner and Schwab, 2020). I think it is important for a teacher or an educator to meet the goals by the most effective means, that is, to bring out the best in students by minimizing friction in interests between educator and student (Pozas, Letzel, and Schneider, 2020).

6) Additional information:

Here you should include any additional information of which you feel that your tutor should be aware. For example, any ethical considerations which may impinge on your work or any particular constraints which may affect your study
The study is focused on descriptive analysis which intends to discuss the human behavior and impact of differentiation of teaching on this behavior. It has multifold implications due to which study can be lengthy and time consuming which is the major constraint in conducting the study. Therefore, it might also incur cost which is a major concern for the research. I need to be very critical and selective to acknowledge which data suits the study and have significant implications for the subject matter (Rashidov, 2020). The major ethical consideration is to remain unbiased during the research. This research is focused on enhancing my service and therefore, as a person, I can modify, manipulate data to fulfill my objective. But the purpose of the service and also the research will get impaired and this will mean that I cannot grow holistically (Pozas, Letzel, and Schneider, 2020). This will be unfair to the study, my development, and also the students who will not get the best service they should be getting. While conducting a survey, choosing the participants can also be impaired, if I choose from only one pool suitable for my conclusion that I might have perceived in advance. Therefore, I need to survey teachers from different schools and universities randomly (Rashidov, 2020).
