Background to the research
Sleep is a universal biological characteristic across all animals (Cirelli & Tononi, 2008). Sleep is a vital process that enables the body and mind to recover, resulting in a renewed and focused state upon awakening. Peaceful sleep contributes to bodily health and mitigates the risk of diseases. Insufficient sleep hinders optimal brain function, adversely affecting concentration, clarity of thought, and memory processing. Inadequate sleep might result in significant repercussions for your health. A single night of sleeplessness can impair A PERSON’S ability to concentrate and think effectively, resulting in feelings of fatigue or lethargy throughout the day. Insufficient sleep increases the likelihood of irritability and poor decision-making (Bryan et al., 2024). Sleep is essential because of its influence on overall health. Adequate sleep is essential for mental focus and memory preservation, stress management, weight regulation, immune system enhancement, and various other health requirements. (Charles, 2021). Sleep is a vital activity for all people and animals, similar to breathing and feeding. Sleep is a normal process that lets the body and brain relax. Sleep looks easy at first, but it's not. For most individuals, all they have to do is get comfy, close their eyes, and fall asleep. Sleep is one of the most complicated and enigmatic things that happens in the body, even if it seems easy. (Cleveland clinic, 2023). Sleep disorders are conditions that affect the quality, amount and timing of sleep you’re able to get at night (Natasha, 2025). The collective term sleep disorder refers to conditions that affect sleep quality, timing, or duration and can impact a person’s ability to properly function while they are awake. Within Australia, 60% of the total population of international students are suffering from severe sleep disorder. There are several factors that cause sleep disorder among international students in Australia (Issue of Sleep Disorder in Australia, 2024). Moreover 64.8% of the total population believes that international students generally face high amounts of stress due to distance from family, isolation and managing their routine which increases the issue of sleep disorder. It has also identified that there is an increasing rate of depression and anxiety with international students that results in causing sleep disturbance. Depression and anxiety also increase with increased academic pressure leading to an impact on the sleep cycle of a student. Moreover, sleep disorder with international students is often caused due to homesickness as they feel lonely and isolated in a new country which can leads to depression and anxiety. Along with this, it has identified that there is a high trend of working late night shifts with international students that can also result in impacting their sleep (Causes of Sleep Disorder, 2023).
It has been identified ?? BY WHO that sleep disorder CAN CREATE A BIG impact on overall academic level of students. Due to this issue student PLURAL are unable to remain attentive at universities, face issue PLURAL in learning and memorizing which ultimately impact on their overall academic growth. Along with this, sleep disorder also CAN HAVE A BIG impact on THE overall behaviour of the student as it causes irritation and annoyances within them.
Further, the research has also outlined the fact that having enough sleep is essential for the successful working and maintenance of the health of the person. To have good health, sleep is important and, ultimately, overall working is improved. Having minimum sleep is needed for the person because it helps in managing, maintaining and regulating A PERSON’S appetite and having a good metabolism also, the hormonal and cardiovascular functioning will also be improved (Meaklim et al., 2020). Hence, AN effective type of sleep must be maintained so that overall working can be improved and ultimately, A PERSON can manage and maintain a good and healthy life. Moreover, in case there is too little or too much sleep, then it can increase the chances of A PERSON getting different types of diseases. This includes diseases SUCH AS type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, coronary heart disease and many other different types of diseases, which can impact the working and learning of the person to a great extent. Moreover, the study ?? WHAT STUDY – UNCLEAR includes the findings that the quality of sleep and the length of sleep are directly related to life satisfaction and whether the student is satisfied or not.
Further, another study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health included a study on 1,234 young people from Western Australia. This is the first type of study which was CONDUCTED to investigate the quality of sleep health among adults and how this affected their health. The study highlighted that 30 % of the young people in the study stated that they are sleeping less than 7-9 hours at night. Also, 18 % of them stated that they take nearly 30 minutes more time to fall asleep. 60 % of them agreed that they lack regular sleeping hours and as a result, they have a sleep disorder (1 in 4 young Australians aren’t satisfied with their sleep, 2023). Also, the study highlighted that most young people were not satisfied with their sleeping patterns and, they face different types of health issues as well as having impaired daytime alertness and distress. It has BEEN identified that over 824951 international students are studying IN Australia among which 57.6% of THE STUDENT population are facing issue related to sleep disorder (Number of International students, 2024). It has identified that there is AN increasing trend of undertaking education from outside THEIR home country due to THE high quality of education THAT IS OFFERED STUDENTS, high growth opportunities and to gain A high level of experiences. However. his trend also results in causing various serious mental, physical, social and emotional impacts on student (McArdle et al., 2020). Moreover, the finding of this study highlighted that both physical and mental health scores were lower for the people during the day as the people slept less than the required amount of sleep. However, when the correct amount of sleep is taken by the person then it improves the overall efficiency of the student. Due, to enough the sleep, the student is capable of managing work well and ultimately the efficiency is improved and the mental and physical problems are solved better. Moreover, the effective type of sleep can improve the capability of the student to identify the root cause of the sleeping disorder and try to work on improving the same.
Obtaining adequate sleep at night might aid in stress management. Individuals who awaken refreshed escape the pressures associated with operating under sleep deprivation, including decreased performance, impaired cognitive clarity, and reduced energy levels. Quality sleep can mitigate anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges associated with stress. (Summer, 2024). Along with this, past studies have shown that poor sleep is also related to the development of chronic health conditions and other cardiovascular diseases as well. Thus, it is necessary to effectively try to manage workLOADS and ensure that the effective type of sleeping disorder is improved NEEDS TO BE MADE CLEARER so that the overall NEEDS TO BE MADE CLEARER . Thus, the current study will enhancing knowledge well and, ultimately, the sleeping issue can be solved effectively. To have a better and good life, the appropriate sleeping disorder must be managed so that the person can effectively manage the work and can lead a happy and successful life (McArdle et al, 2020). When the sleep of the student is fulfilled well, then it will improve the overall efficiency, and ultimately, the capability of the student will be improved. Thus, the efficiency needs to be improved, and ultimately, the student will be more active and will be participating in a much better manner.
A sleep disorder is defined as a problem which relates to the time, quality and amount of sleep which the person requires but is not getting. It may also be referred to as the conditions that can lead to changes in the way a person sleep. Nevertheless, when the person is having any of the issues, then this can lead to sleep disorder, and ultimately, the working and well-being of the person is impacted greatly (Williams et al., 2023). It can also be termed a sleep-wake disorder, and this can also result in creating other mental health conditions as well. These other conditions include issues such as anxiety, depression, cognitive disorder and many other different types of mental health issues. All these issues are the result of the sleep disorder, and this can affect the mental health of the person greatly. In general, a sleep disorder is a situation wherein the person does not get enough sleep, and because of this, the overall working and, mental and physical health and well-being of the person is impacted. Having a high sleep disorder is not good and can create issues with the quality of life. This is because when the effective type of sleep is not taken by the person, then the most common effect is created on the schedule of the person. When the sleep will not be enough then the next day student will not be able to concentrate on the working better. For instance, the student has taken 2 hours less sleep which they usually take then it will be delaying the whole schedule by minimum of 2 hours. When there is lack of sleep then it affects the working efficiency as the mind of the student is not able to concentrate on a particular thing. Hence, for this the overall capability is affected and ultimately the schedule is affected. In case of less sleep then student will not be in a position to manage the planned activities and ultimately the efficiency is impacted. Thus, for this it is highly required that the needed sleep is taken so that the overall working can be improved and student is capable of managing the working better.

and the quality of life of the person. It is due to the reason that when sleep interrupted , then it will affect the brain of the person and will not be able to have a calm mind. For a student, effective sleep needs to be undertaken. when the required amount of sleep is not taken, then it can create an impact on the working responsibilities and health of the student. The most common effect on the working of the student life is that their thinking and perception are impacted. Further, when effective sleep is not taken by the student, then their mind is not in active mode, and they will not have enough capability to think effectively, and their learning can be impacted. Moreover, another problem PLURAL associated with sleep disorder is that it can create negative effects on physical health, working performance and capability (Binjabr et al., 2023). The reason behind the problem is that when the person is not capable of managing sleep, then it can create a major effect on the mental and emotional well-being of the person. Thus, it creates issues in thinking capability, and they are unable to manage the working well. Also, currently, the lifestyle of the people has changed, and students are much more involved in using mobile and other social media platforms. Thus, this CAN CREATE issues relating to sleeping disorders, as students tend to use TELEPHONES at night, and as a result, they do not sleep on time. Thus, THEIR overall work is affected, and people are not able to manage their sleep and are unable to work the next day. So, it creates a negative impact on the working LIFE of the person.. Moreover, the working capability is also affected greatly and ultimately, the efficiency of the student CAN BE impacted to a LARGE extent (Roitblat et al., 2020). Another problem associated with sleeping disorders is that the dietary and intake CAN also impact the sleep disorder, and it can affect the working capability greatly.
Research objective and Scope of study
The purpose of this research study was to examine the impact of sleep disorder on the well- being of international students and how this contributes to their health, plus identify support mechanisms that COULD help them. The main objectives of the study were to:Describe sleep disorders among international students in a higher education institution, focusing on factors such as stress and work responsibilities, plus cultural adjustment; Examine the impact of sleep disorders on international students’ academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being, including the role of stress, anxiety, and homesickness, and Identify international students’ perspectives on support mechanisms that help improve sleep quality and manage sleep disorders.
Significance and contributions
The current study is based on analysing sleep disorder and how it affects the well-being of students. So, the present study is based on evaluating and analysing the issues that a person with a sleeping disorder may face. The current study is of significance to all international students. Further, the information related to sleeping disorder and its diverse impact on physical, academic, social and economic well- being of student will help them in taking accurate actions on timely basis. This information will create awareness related to significance of following a sleep schedule that aids international students in taking proactive actions. Every student faces a similar kind of issue, and, the overall health can be affected (Cook et al., 2020). Thus, the findings of the current study can also be applied by students in other countries as well. The present study will firstly analyse the different types of sleep problems which the students, can face. It is due to the reason that when the student or the person knows the different aspects relating to different types of sleep disorders, then they can relate whether they have any disorder or not. This section of the study relating to the different types of the sleeping disorder are present and when the student knows about them then they will be capable of assessing the fact that what type of the disorder they are facing. Hence, for this the current study is of significance for the student as they can assess and enhance their knowledge relating to the factors resulting in sleeping disorder. When the student will be in a position to understand the problem then they will be highly capable of managing and identifying the solutions as well. Also, every student is distinct from one another and it is not necessary that the same strategy work in same direction. Thus, the current study will be helping the student to understand the problem according to their own behaviour and ultimately they will be capable of finding a better solution to it.
the present study will also outline the effects and impact of the disorder which is created on the academic, physical, mental and other well-being of A e student. Thus, by analysing the findings of the present study, students can relate to and check whether there are similar kinds of impacts and symptoms faced by them or not (Mulyadi et al., 2021).
Along with this, the study will also be analysing and exploring the different types of strategies and ways of overcoming this issue of sleep disorder and trying to improve the working life. Hence, with this section of the study, the students can evaluate and understand the different ways through which sleep disorders can be managed well and overcome the negative effects of working. So, it can be stated that the current f study is significant to the students residing all over the world and can use the findings of the present study to understand sleeping disorder and try to make use of the resources and strategies for managing and MINIMISING the negative effects of the sleeping disorder (Seoane et al, 2020)., the FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY will be helpful for educational institutions and policy makers as well. corrective actions by education institutions can be taken so that better management

Rationale of the study
Within the highly competitive environment, compliance with good sleep is pivotal for the growth and development of the student. Whether it be academic growth, personal growth or emotional connection. This is necessary for the successful working and career of the student, as with the help of good sleep, the student is capable of managing and maintaining a good schedule throughout whole day. In case there are issues present in the sleep, then the student will not be capable of concentrating on the things that are highly needed for the development of the students. Sleep helps the person relax the brain, and in case the brain is not be relaxed then it will affect the efficiency of the person. Thus, for this, it is necessary for the people they must have enough sleep so that the overall working capability is improved. When the mind is relaxed then it will promote better regulation of the blood within the body. When the brain relaxes, then automatically the overall working is improved and people are capable of focusing on the other activities. For instance, the student takes enough of the sleep in night then the next day, the student is able to concentrate more and this makes them more attentive. It is due to the reason that with the enough of the sleep, the mind and body of the student relaxes and as a result the person is capable of managing the work better. Many of the existing studies have highlighted that having enough of the sleep is very important for the effective working of the body of the person. Then the body rests then all the parts of the body gets active after waking up and with this the student or the person is capable of managing the working and all the activities well. This is highly required for the students that they take enough of the sleep as it will be assisting the person in managing the work better and attain all their objectives well.
One of the studies highlighted that the insufficiency of sleep can cause many different negative impacts on the body of the person. This is highly affecting the work because when sufficient sleep is not taken, then it creates a negative effect on the mental and physical health of the student, and slowly it can also create an effect on the cognitive capability and skills of the student. When enough of sleep is not taken then it will create huge impacts on the working efficiency and capability. The study surveyed with the Canadian university in which 601 students respondent to the survey questions. With the result, it was highlighted that one third of the population is having insufficient sleep, which is less than 6.5 hours. Further, the two third of the population stated that they have the perception that they are not getting enough the sleep. Moreover, the conclusion of this study highlighted that there is high association between the number of sleep and high quality sleep (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6986411/). This is present because when the sleeping hours are more then automatically the quality will be improved. On the other side, in case the person is not having enough the sleep then then the quality of the sleep will also be effective. Thus, for this, the present research topic is selected as it will assist the researcher in highlighting the sleeping disorder among international students and what issues and problems will they be facing while going to other countries for studying.
In addition to this another study was also evaluated which emphasised the fact that the psychological distress of the sleep duration also creates a major issue for the healthy life of the person. This study was conducted within the Sydney population catchment, Australia, and it recruited people aged between 13-19 years and was recruited with the help of social media. The results of the report highlighted that the students who have high psychological distress have more issues in the sleeping. Along with this it was also highlighted that the use of social media is another cause because of which the students are not capable of getting enough of the sleep. Another reason highlighted was the long time spent on doing the homework. Thus, with all these results of this study it was assessed that the compliance with enough sleep is highly needed. In case enough of sleep is taken by the person, then the overall capability is improved and ultimately the efficiency is improved.
Thus, with the help of these studies, it is clear that there is a high need to increase the knowledge relating to the ways of managing the sleeping disorder. Also, before managing the sleeping disorder, the student needs to understand the factors contributing to the sleeping disorder. Also, it is necessary for the scholar to analyse the impact of the disorder in sleep on the performance of the student. This performance can be in terms of academic, personal, mental, emotional or the overall well-being of the person.
