Reflective Report
Introduction - Professional and Academic Skills Development Assignment Sample
A first-class honors degree is an important academic target to those students who have entered into competitive graduate labor markets in the “United Kingdom”. The business world, and especially the involvement of a Business Analyst, requires more than just a degree. Hence, my academic and professional goal is to finish my studies and achieve a degree of first-class honors and become a “Business Analyst Professional” in the United Kingdom. This career does not only need academic knowledge but also involves effective communication skills, thinking skills, problem solving ability and team work. In order to achieve my academic and professional future, I should consider both my weaknesses and points to develop, particularly in the fields of communication and collaboration (Silk et al. 2023). Though I write well, I have in most cases been unable to communicate my thoughts with confidence when it comes to group discussions and presentations. Such gaps may impact on academic performance as well as career readiness. In order to facilitate my growth, I would employ “SWOT analysis” and incorporate “Kolb Learning Cycle”, “Honey-Mumford Learning Styles”, to provide reflection and planning.

1.0 Reflection and the self-assessment
Personal evaluation and reflection of the academic goal
Regarding my course, I want to get a first-class honors degree means the final score between seventy and eighty-nine percent. This objective is significant because it serves me well in my pursuit of graduate positions in “United Kingdom” that is, the business area (Lang, 2023). I have an ambition to be a Business Analyst, which will be a job needing good academic performance, communication skills, time, planning, and work with teams.
Application of Self-Assessment Tool on the basis of SWOT Analysis
I applied the simple self-assessment instrument known as SWOT analysis to assist me in reflecting upon my current situation. Four major areas are diagnosed using this tool; these areas are “Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats”.
Strengths:
Being organized is one of my biggest strengths. I have a diary or a day planner to set deadlines and track down assignments. I also go to all my classes that I attend and normally I am on time. I also like reading and make notes, which enables me to gain adequate preparation of the expositive tasks and testing. These habits enable me to be focused and avoid last-minute stresses.
Weaknesses: My incapability of speaking in front of other people is one of my weaknesses. I am scared to talk in a group or when we have to present it in class (Wijnen-Meijer et al. 2022). This takes away my confidence. I am also not able to tackle major tasks early enough in time and this has often made me work with pressure towards the end of a deadline.
Opportunities: I can work on many improvements. My university also provides the workshops to assist on time handling and communication. I also get feedbacks provided by tutors and I am able to use this to provide better work in the future.
Threats: One of the problems I have is undertaking too much assignments simultaneously. This could bring about stress and weaken my performance. The second problem is that I like to work individually.
Emphasis to the Key Strengths Affecting Academic Performance
One of the most useful strengths that I have during my school life is that I am able to keep myself organized. I plan my assignments and follow a study schedule; therefore, I never miss my deadlines. My reading and writing capabilities are also helpful in supporting my learning particularly in research-based tasks.
Determination of the Areas that need Improvement Concerning Academic Ambitions
In order to achieve my plans to graduate with good results, some areas need my improvement. To start with, I should be able to develop confidence in addressing people. This will help in taking part in classes, making group discussions and presentations (Lumbanraja et al. 2024). Second, I have to improve my teamwork in the group activities.

This will assist me to be ready to undertake the type of work that would be awaiting me in the future career. Lastly, I should give myself time to plan, to revise my work, and to seek an opinion, not leaving big assignments to the last moment.
Lastly, I should give myself time to plan, to revise my work, and to seek an opinion, not leaving big assignments to the last moment. Through these areas, I think I will become a better performer in University and become better prepared to become a Business Analyst in a career.
2.0 Career Ambition
Outline of the career goals and specific development action
I want to be a successful Business Analyst in a company located in the “United Kingdom”. In order to do so, I should work on the development of communication, planning, and time management skills. These are important skills that are involved in teamwork, problem solving and effective presenting (Rahmi, 2024). I will attend workshops and complete group assignments as well as request feedback to become better. It will also involve developing a “Personal Development Plan” accompanied by SMART goals. This plan will assist me to enhance the areas that I am lagging behind and it will make me ready to excel academically and career challenges that I am going to face in future.
Discussion of the critical role of communication skills in achieving career ambitions
In the future, my career aspiration is to establish myself as a Business Analyst at (the “mid-sized UK based company”). Communication skills are also important in this job since I will have to clarify ideas to various people such as managers, team members, and clients (Passarelli and Kolb, 2023). I should be able to give out technical information in a simple fashion so that everyone can understand it. I will also be required to write reports, meet, and make presentations of my findings. Failure to communicate effectively may cause errors or misunderstanding that may influence achievement of a business project.
Good communication does not just involve speaking. Writing emails, listening skills, offering feedback and being a team player are also some of the many skills. A potential employer would want someone who can express and listen with clarity in thought and understanding. Communication is also used to establish trust and good work relationship. That is why I think that communication is among the most significant skills that I should enhance when focusing on the future career.
Reflection on the personal factors undermining communication ability
I have observed that there is a personal factor that influences my communications. A lack of confidence is one of the leading problems. I always lack confidence in talking in front of people or even in a classroom. I am afraid of making a mistake, and English is not my native language. This, at times prohibits me to give my ideas, even when I have an answer or a good point.
The other problem is that I am not fond of group work. I like to work individually, yet I realize that I would be required to work in team in the majority of jobs (Rasheed and Wahid, 2021). Due to this practice, I lose opportunities of practising communication and teamwork skills. These individual obstacles have restricted my development in this aspect.
Clarification of how these skills are to be improved in preparing future career practices
As part of becoming a successful Business Analyst, I should enhance my communication in the spoken and written words. I will speak in the classroom and participate in group activity. I will be seeking feedback as well to get to know what I can improve on (Hattie and O’Leary, 2025). I will also be more confident by reading and writing more in English. After enhancing these skills, I stand in a better position to work in groups, make presentations during meetings and articulate my thoughts. All these improvements will assist me in managing well in my future employment.
3.0 The Application of various Theories
Application of Appropriate Theories and Scholarly Materials on Explaining Strengths and Weaknesses
I reviewed literature based on recent works that expand traditional theories of learning to get a clearer perspective of my academic and personal growth.
The “Experiential Learning Theory” created by Kolb proposes a cycle involving concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. Recent study by Wijnen-Meijer et al. (2022) which applied this model in practical experience of the students in their education and viewpoint is that integrating the real-life experience, contemplation, and practice enhances learning and skills when put into practice (Syyrilä et al. 2022). My strong areas are being reflective and organized with information and this is useful in writing essays and doing research. But I struggle to apply what I learn to live tasks, like group discussion or group presentation and this hinders my practical learning and engagement.
The “Learning Styles model” described by “Honey and Mumford” refers to learners as “Activists, Reflectors, Theorists and Pragmatists”. “Reflectors and Theorists” would rather observe and analyses first before having a say (Lejeune et al. 2021). This type of learning helps to plan carefully and write well academically but may drag team activity in a fast case scenario (Lang, 2023). This is consistent with my experience where I rely in group discussions and take long to suggest an idea.
Communication-related Theories
Johari model focuses on self-disclosure and feedback as a process to improve communication. Recent conceptual analysis demonstrated that minimizing the invisible space using information dissemination and feedback leads to increased trust and collaboration at work (Lumbanraja et al. 2024).
The “Theory of Needs” developed by McClelland proposes that there are three prime motivations namely “achievement, affiliation and power”. Although I did not mention a specific reference in this case, the motivation to affiliate reportedly enhances group work (Siok et al. 2023). To me, as a “Business Analyst”, I have to purposely develop more affiliation-driven behaviors: behaviors like participating, listening, and cooperating, to achieve success.
Creation of the “Personal Development Plan (PDP)
PDP plan to develop the skills of communication and key strengths
A “Personal Development Plan (PDP)” assists in making definite aims and recording improvement with time. This PDP should be applied within a time period of the next 12 months in order to guarantee improvement on a constant and measurable basis (Sulistioyuwono, 2025). The following plan contains three SMART goals that are applicable to my requirements and future plans.
Specific Goal
Identification of the 3 SMART goals
SMART Goal 1: To improve the confidence of verbal communication.
Specific: To build confidence in demonstrating, communicating through talks and presentations before a group of people.
Measurable: I will be actively participating with at least one English lesson conversation or a group activity every week during 10 weeks.
Action: Make brief notes before every lesson, talk to myself more at home recording the video and also do university workshops on communication and ask peers and tutors to comment regularly on my improvement.
Realistic: It is feasible to speak at least once a week as well as do coursework and improve gradually.
Time-Bound: The completion period of this goal is within 10 weeks and the progress will be reviewed after 5 weeks and after 10 weeks.
SMART Goal 2: I will enhance the time management and planning skills.
Specific: In order to work out a more effective system of management of assignments, deadlines, and group tasks.
Measurable: I will complete week perception with a digital planner to regulate the tasks and mark done activities on a daily basis.
Action: Develop a study schedule weekly on Sundays, break larger projects to smaller-sized subprojects with their respective deadlines, and create alerts and reminders through Google Calendar.
Realistic: Unpaid and easy-to-access tools are used in this strategy and it does not impose disruption on my existing academic routine.
Time-Bound: This process will continue in 12 months, and each month, self-assessment will be conducted to change the strategies accordingly.
SMART Goal 3: Enhance Team work and Group work Solidarity
Specific: In order to be more engaged and productive in the team-based activities involved in the work in the academic setting as the implementation of Business Analyst work done requires working cross-functionally (PULATOV, 2024).
Measurable: I will attend at least one team-based activity on each academic term and will be active in terms of shared deliverable contributions.
Action: Enroll in a group coursework, volunteer to complete some assignments in a team, participate in out-of-school competitions in teams or competitions sponsored by business organizations, and seek peer reviews.
Realistic: One activity per term is a realistic intention to undertake that will assist in the growth of collaborative knowledge and abilities without causing any negative absence in academic undertakings.
Time-Bound: I would like it to be done in two academic terms (approximately 6 months), and would like to have a reflection after each activity that could be done to see growth.
This PDP will make my development very specific, quantifiable, and in line with academic needs and future career goals.
The step needed to be taken:
I will also require taking regular and realistic steps in order to attain the objectives stated in my PDP. To develop a fundamental base, I will visit university workshops dedicated to the practice of time management, team communication, and public speaking in front of an audience. Digital tools, like “Google Calendar and Trello” should also be used to plan the tasks and be aware of the deadlines. During any class or group work, I will be ready and expect to speak at least once in order to develop the verbal confidence. I will also ask peers and tutors to review their progress and determine gaps.
The reflection on the Progress
I will track my progress with help of a weekly journal where I could reflect on the difficulties, the progress, and the feedback that I have received. Self-reviews on a monthly basis will enable me to hold myself responsible towards every SMART goal. Peer and tutor response will be necessary in order to keep track of the actual progress made and know what to do next.
