Introduction

Reflection refers to the procedure of critically analysing an experience while highlighting own strengths and weaknesses. In current portfolio, I will write reflection and provide detailed comprehensive analysis of work experience at Circle Care in the role of support worker. I am going to use Gibb’s reflective cycle for writing reflection and accordingly, reflection will be written while considering six stages; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan (Pieper et al, 2021). Description

During my placement, I got the opportunity to work with vulnerable individuals who needs varied type of care. I have worked with varied vulnerable patients and ensured focus on empowering them along with enhancing their health outcomes. My placement at Circle Care proves to be a life-changing experience for me, it has ensured me the opportunity to enhance my skills while developing understanding related to the complexities of care. I got an effectual opportunity to assess my strengths and areas of improvement. I have worked as a support worker and my core motive was to provide care and support to individuals having varying level of dependency. My routine tasks at the care setting aligned with assisting patient with personal care, administering medication, empowering them, engaging in activities, preparing meals and promoting socialisation and independence. I have worked with individuals struggling through dementia, mental health conditions, learning disabilities and physical disabilities I can say that each day proves to be unique for me as it comprehended with new challenges and opportunities.

I want to share a significance experience; I have worked with Mr Alex [I am using pseudonym for maintaining the confidentiality of patient] 62 years old male suffering from depression. Mr Alex’s wife had cancer and she died last year, after this incident patient suffering from mental health complexity as he is not able to accept this drastic event. Working with Mr Alex enabled me to understand the issues and complexities of patient. Further, I have analysed that it is highly important to empower patient by developing collaboration with them. Empathetic understanding is an essential element as it supports in understanding the complexities of patient and further develops mutual trust (Moilanen et al, 2021). I tried to talk with Mr Alex but all the time he kept quiet. At initial stage I was not able to identify the ways through which I can ensure support to Mr Alex However, my supervisor supported me in throughout this situation and further told me to develop a mutual understanding with patient while talking with them. Mr Alex was already on cognitive behavioural therapy and my role was to look upon him throughout the day. This experience was quite challenging for me but I have used my learning during this case procedure and with the help of my mentor I was able to provide consistent support to patient.

Feelings

During this placement I had varied feeling that associates with positive and negative spheres. There were certain incidents where I felt positive on the other hand, in certain context I felt negative. When Mr Alex wad not responding to me at that time, I felt negative and I often thought that I am not able to support patient. However, my mentor told me to understand the complexity of case, I have done this and when I got to know about the loss of Mr Alex, I realised that he is suffering from pain. I initiated consistent conversation with him, I started asking about his hobbies and interest. At initial stage Mr Alex refuse to share anything but afterwards, he started to speak regarding his hobbies. Further he told me that he misses his wife and he also has one daughter and he want to meet with her. I felt bunch of emotion during this conversation and I further told Mr Alex that her daughter will come here and he would be able to meet her. In the role of support worker, I have performed different task for Mr Alex, I felt happy while performing these tasks, I focused on his personal care that include bathing, dressing and using toilet.

Further, I have prepared meal for patient on the basis of dietary needs and preferences along with administrating medication on time. I was effectively performing all of these tasks and this led to develop higher self-esteem in me. Hence, I can say that when I started to understand Mr Alex situation and pain then I was able to implement effectual connection with him. By engaging him in discussion I tried to empower him. I remember one conversation in which Mr Alex told me that he is proud of his wife as she used to take care of him and she was so ambitious and I told him that “your wife must be very lucky as she had you”, I can still witness the sparkle on patient face as he was so happy after hearing this fact.

Evaluation

I have learned varied things which are essential for enhancing patient outcomes, I got to know that communication skill plays important role in understanding the issues of patient (Mahajan, Gupta and Misra, 2022). I have used these skills while communicating with different individuals and this made me aware regarding their needs and requirements and subsequently, I have taken decision related to intervention plan. Personalised care planning is essential in care services; it aims to assure support to patient while prioritising their needs and values (McArthur et al, 2021). For Mr Alex I have undertaken personalised care planning and accordingly support was ensured to them and communication was implemented. This resulted in gaining the trust of patient and further I was able to enhance health outcomes. Furthermore, I got the opportunity for working in team and this led to improve collaboration ability. Earlier, I was not able to work in collaboration. However, this experience enabled me to work with multidisciplinary teams associates with different healthcare professionals and social workers.

Guidance from professionals enabled me to undertake risk assessment and subsequently, I have taken decision regarding care plans. Support workers have the responsibility in terms of implementing cultural awareness at the setting and accordingly, I have learned the importance for respecting culture of each individual and this ultimately results in creating effectual support for patient. Thus, I will use this learning in future as well so that I can become able to enhance individual outcomes along with creating significant support for them. While evaluating the experience, I realised that it is pivotal to prioritise the requirement of patient as each individual has unique requirement and accordingly, personalised plan should be made.

Analysis

While analysing the whole experience, I have developed certain insights that could have been done differently for gaining significant outcomes. In context of building relationship with patient, I have faced varied challenges and therefore, I find difficult to implement a bond. Apart from Mr Alex there was different patient suffering from trauma and substance abuse, I was not able to implement connection with them. I realised that by spending more time with patient I could have been able to develop an effectual bond with them. Furthermore, certain tasks such s supporting people with physical disabilities proves to be challenging for me. However, by getting additional support from colleagues I was able to solve these challenges and further this supported me in creating interaction with team members. There is no doubt in stating that all of these challenges provided me opportunities in terms of enhancing my practices and learning.

Therapeutic alliance with patient proves to be highly important as it supports in understanding their issues which is crucial for gaining effectual outcomes (Martínez et al, 2021). I have learned this thing from current experience and I will imply this in future so that I can effectively gain appropriate outcomes. In Mr Alex case I tried to empower him and this made me realise that patient empowerment is highly important as this is ultimately linked with patient health outcomes. I will develop significant focus on this area and accordingly, I am going to empower patients. Moreover, I realised that documentation and record-keeping is important component as it provides idea regarding patient recovery procedure and further actions can be taken accordingly. I have maintained appropriate documentation and record-keeping system related to each patient which enabled me to understand about their recovery process and further actions were taken accordingly.

Conclusion

Conclusively; I can say that placement at Circle Care proves to be an effective experience for me, it was equipped with skills, knowledge and significant understanding related to high-quality care. Different insights were gained by me and this led to support in taking appropriate actions in future. My core motive aligns with developing an inclusive environment at the setting so that equality can be ensured to each patient. In this manner, I would be able to gain effective results along with enhancing patient outcomes. Empowering individuals is an important thing which requires to be focused out. This enabled me to enhance resilience capabilities of patient so they can become able to accept the situation and this further lead to enhance their health outcomes to greater extent. There is no doubt in stating that this experience led to create significant opportunities for me and I have become able to understand the issues of patient and accordingly, I have taken further actions.

In future as well I am going to implement focus on this area, further, I have identified certain areas of improvement that entails with developing emotional intelligence abilities so I can become able to understand the issues of individuals and subsequently, interaction could be developed with them. However, before Mr Alex case I was not able to develop connection with patient due to lack of EI capabilities. Now, I have increased self-confidence as I implemented connection with Mr Alex and therefore, I am going to focus on this area. This experience is upholding the notion of certain improvement which lead to support me in future practices therefore, I will focus on collaborating with team members so I can improve my coordination abilities (Scott and Willison, 2021). Further I need to enhance resilience capabilities so that I can face drastic situations without being in stress.

Action Plan

In future I am going to use assertive skills while working with colleagues and this support me in implementing effectual collaboration with them. Effective coordination between all members will enable me to understand the issues of patient and with the guidance of expert I would easily take appropriate actions which ultimately links with enhancing health outcomes of people. Thus, I will be focusing on this context so that I can get effectual outcomes, my core motive entails with patient empowerment and enhancing patient outcomes. Therefore, I am going to implement consistent interaction with patient and accordingly, personalised care plan could be made. Thus, supports in gaining the trust of patient and often I will be able to develop mutual understanding with patient. Henceforth, my core motive is to develop consistent support for patient.

Furthermore, I will practice mindfulness for enhancing own resilience capabilities and this enables in tackling stressful situation (Moilanen et al, 2021). It is important to have an effective resilience ability as it supports in tackling the challenges comprised with each case and practices. Thereby, I will practice mindfulness approaches for gaining effective results and this significantly supports in gaining effective outcomes. Hence, I am going to prioritise building relationship with patient specially who have the history of trauma and abuse. I would seek additional support from healthcare professionals and colleagues. Also, I will take participate in training programs for developing skills in me so that I can perform complex tasks. These are the contextual domains which will be focused out by me and subsequently, effective practices will be performed for developing significant outcomes. I will never discriminate among patient and I am going to respect each of their culture, equality would be prioritised and subsequently, patient outcomes will be enhanced to greater extent. I will use this learning in future while performing my job practices.
