I will be focusing on three important areas that have gained my attention during the module and those would be “Identity”, “Exploring the meaning of homelessness” and “Suicide and modern society”. However, I have witnessed other topics, but I don’t want to involve them in my discussion. My core focus would be on the selected three contexts related to life. By emphasising on these areas, I can gain in-depth knowledge that is going to convey my theoretical and practical knowledge. An effectual understanding related to identity makes me aware of self, whereas understanding the homelessness connects me with social context. The link and paradigm between suicide and modern society will be witnessed and how this is impacting individuals’ lives will be focused out. Reflection 1

Title: identity

What?

During this module, I got an opportunity to learn about the concept of identity. It determines the senses that depict about an individual as a part of social group. Moreover, it is also aligned with the thoughts of other individuals regarding ourselves (Kouvelis and Kangas, 2021). Reflecting on my social identity, I can say that I am a South African woman, a mother and a partner. This module has made me aware of my identity, I got to know that my identity is related to my potential. I have always thought that my gender contributes to my identity. However, identity is a bigger phenomenon that is just not limited to a gender. It is composed of the thought’s capabilities and power an individual holds.

So what?

When I was asked about my identity, I always used to say that I am a South African woman and due to this people often showed disagreement in their behaviour towards me. This was the time when I didn’t feel good. I just wanted that people adore me for who I am and not for my religion or culture. People have always taken identity as gender, culture and background components. However, identity is more than this (Giddens, 2023). When I got the opportunity to speak on my identity at that time I have depicted about the struggles and resilience abilities that made me a human who believes in humanity. However, on the other hand, social identity theory states that sense of self gets impacted by the groups in which people live. The self-esteem of an individual also impacts the identity to the utmost note. I agree on this viewpoint as well. My confidence level contributes to my identity, the way I speak and present myself denotes my identity hence, self-esteem is an essential component in self-identity.

Now What?

I can say that my perception regarding self-identity has been changed. I have got to know many things about myself that I can deal with struggling situations and I can show empathy towards other people. Now if someone ask me about my identity then, I will speak with confidence so that people can get surprised with my self-esteem. This is how I will present myself; I will never hesitate to speak on my identity.

Reflection 2

Title: Exploring the meaning of homelessness

What

During week six I have learned about the homelessness, this week was concerned with positive and negative experiences. When I was able to understand everything then, this led to create positive thoughts in me. However, when my tutor told me to search for some articles related to homelessness at that time, I found varied difficulties due to ineffective critical analysis and research skill. I was not able to witness appropriate articles and this led to developing issues for me. Here I had lack of confidence in me due to which I was not able to search appropriate information and this impacted my assignments as well.

So What?

I have shared my doubts with tutor during this learning and they have assured me effectual support throughout this learning session. They told me to focus on my critical analysis and researching skills so that I can effectively find articles. Therefore, I have focused on undertaking critical evaluation of each of the source based on their content and authenticity. This enabled me to select effectual sources and further authentic information has been included in the assignment. After approaching significant sources, I got to know about the real meaning of homelessness. I got to know that a person who does not have home suffers so much (Sullivan, 2023). However, in UK there are varied action has been undertaken to reduce the cases of homelessness (Mitchell, 2020). I will further focus on enhancing my critical analysis and research skills so that I can effectively include authentic content in my assignment. This led to developing significant support for me and this further resulted in enhancing the quality of the assignment as well. This experience has impacted my confidence level to greater utmost and therefore, I can say that I have become able to build up my confidence and this will further support me in future as well.

Now What?

During this module, I have gained understanding of homelessness and this further I was able to develop certain skills such as critical analysis and research skills. Henceforth, in future, I will use this skill so that I can effectively approach relevant information. In future, I will perform differently in such type of situations as I would have gained critical analysis and research skills. I will undertake a critical evaluation of the sources so that I can effectively focus on completing my assignment. The learning from this experience will enable me to learn about the topic of homelessness such as the “rise of homelessness after the pandemic”. I will be able to gain an effective understanding related to these topics.

Reflection 3

Title: Suicide and modern society

What?

This learning enabled me to gain an in-depth understanding related to suicide within modern society. I have learned that in modern society, suicide has been delineated as the part of largest process that is associated with the social change, it is considered as the signal of the modernization process (Mueller et al, 2021). The theoretical perspective related to suicide states that social integration and varied kind of regulation can result in suicide. When I was learning about this topic I got to know about the sociological context and theories that have impacted suicidal aspects. I have come across varied facts through which I got to know that people who attempt suicide get triggered and are also emotionally weak (Stack, 2021).

So What?

In this module, my tutor told me to show my understanding related to suicide and why it has been increasing in modern society. I was very excited to speak on this area as this is linked with social context and I am highly interested in this area. Things that went well associated with undertaking discussion in class regarding these topics. However, when I got the opportunity to speak on individual basis at that time, I was not able to speak. Nevertheless, I was aware of the content but still, I was unable to speak. Afterwards, I realised that this was mainly due to a lack of communication skills in me. I needed to assure focus on this area so that I could effectively speak on the facts that are essential to be considered. Therefore, I have focused on my communication skills and I have made consistent interactions with my classmates. I have discussed the topic with them along with putting my opinions as well. This led to enhance my confidence skills and further supported me in terms of enhancing my confidence level. I started by practising giving presentations on short topics and this resulted in enhancing my confidence level to greater extent.

Now What?

Through this experience, I have learned that by practising I can enhance certain skills in me. When I focused on my communication skills and started to practice upon it then, I became able to speak about the topic. Hence, this led to support me in presenting my thoughts in effective manner. Henceforth, I can say that it is important to focus on communication skills as this is aligned with presenting ourselves in front of everyone. I will use this learning in future as well while discussing about the factors contributing in suicide rate. This led to develop significant support while undertaking learning in this area. This experience enabled me to gain communication skills and in future, I will be able to put my opinions and thoughts with confidence in front of everyone.

Conclusion

Conclusively; I can say that this module provided me with varied opportunities in terms of capturing learning and new skills. There were certain difficulties which has been faced by me such as; lack of critical analysis, lack of confidence and ineffective communication. I have focused on this area and further changed into in my strengths. I will continue to use these skills in the future so that I can effectively present myself and this will further contribute in my personal and professional development as well. Thus, there is no doubt in stating that this module has provided me significant opportunities to undertake learning in sociological context.
