Family background of Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford was born on 31st October 1997 in Manchester, England and he is the professional footballer of the England National Team and Premium League Club. He was raised in Withington, fallow field and Wythenshawe area of UK by his mother named Melanie Maynard. His father name was Robert Rashford who was suffering from drug and alcohol addiction due to which he died at an early age (Family background of Marcus Rashford, 2023). Marcus Rashford was having biracial identity as his father belongs to Jamaican decent and mother Kittitian decent and his grandmother form Saint Kitts, island of West Indies. Marcus is having four older siblings which include two brother named Dane Rashford and Dwaine Rashford and two sisters named Claries and Chantelle. He was having passion of becoming footballer at the age of five when he used to kick ball at the roof of house.

His father observed his talent and dreamed of admitted him in the youth footballer club but unable to do this due to the poor financial position. Marcus Rashford joined Manchester United Youth System at the age of seven and attain Ashton-on-Mersey school which was sponsored by United Academy since 1998. Further, he has degree of BTEC i.e. Business and technology Education council which recognized as Diploma in Sports. In the year of 2016, Marcus was selected in the European Team and he scored two goals in his debut match against Midtjylland (Hackett et al, 2020). He was the youngest English player to score goal in the debut match and represent England in 2018 and 2022 FIFA World cup. In the Manchester United, he has Won FA cups, FA community shield, UFL cups and UEFA European League. He stated that his mother and cousin named Lois Maynard play a crucial role in attaining all the success and growth in the life. He stated that his mother do multiple jobs to pay fees of his football club and further skipped meals as to provide enough food to children (Vinnicombe and Mavin, 2023). His cousin was professional footballer and he used to guide Marcus in sport which helps him in getting success in the career.

Racism experiences of Marcus Rashford

According to view point of Ahmet (2020) racism implies for the diverse policies, barriers, ideologies and laws which prevent individuals from experiencing adequate equality, dignity and hospice in their life. Racism occurs in the form of humiliation, abuse, intimidating behaviour, abuse and violence. Ewart-Biggs (2022) also stated that racism leads to erosion of confidence and result into self-doubting own abilities and capabilities. In this regard, Marcus Rashford has shared his experienced the in Book titled as “You are a champion: how to be the best you can be”. Through this book he created awareness among other black students regarding how to deal with racism issue. Marcus Rashford encountered that as a child he used to think why people always distinguish him on the basis of his colour. He questioned himself regarding why he is facing all such situation and issues in his life.

Based on the view point of Luth et al, (2024) that there is a higher amount of racism in UK’s football association and committee always prioritizes white citizen in their national team. In this context, Marcus Rashford stated that he has faced the larger number of challenges to get entered in Manchester United Youth Club. He stated that his Club head always prioritize white man due to which he was unable to get scholarship in the first attempt. However, his talent and skills helped him in securing the scholarships to get professional training which contributes in attaining success in the life. He further stated that he was dropped from the team due to “selection” reason rather than illness and injury. 

Additionally, Koepfli et al, (2021) stated that racism is a never ending issue of UK and it has become the part of Britain ethnic minorities. It has been identified that black’s social and economical contribution generally ignored at the time of any issue and they are first to blame for all problems within the country. For example: In the final match of Euro 2020, Marcus Rashford has missed a final shootout which leads to losing Euro cup. Due to this incident, he has faced huge racism across the country and people regarded this as his deliberate action to lose the cup. Marcus Rashford has received over 700 racial slurs on his social media accounts and one individual claims that “his dead Nan could score that” (Racism issue of Marcus Rashford, 2024). Further, two fellow black footballers, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho also faced racial abused due to this incident.

However, he did not set back from such incident and decided to take the legal action in against to such abuse. He made a public apology for missing out shootout and also stated that he will never apologise for “who I am” which helps in creating awareness regarding racism in UK.

Social class issue of Marcus Rashford

Based on the view point of Guthrie et al, (2024) social class are the grouping of people on the basis of their wealth, education, race, family, and income. In UK, there is the existence of huge amount of discrimination on the basis of social class which creates issue for the individuals to grasp effective opportunities in the life. Marcus Rushford belongs to the lower/working social class due to which he has faced huge obstacle in effectively attaining its goal (Karacan, 2024). He stated that due to lower social class he was not able to join adequate football training clubs. Further, he stated that players with upper income class were provided with the priority to be selected in the team. He further articulated in his books that at the initial matches he was not selected in team due to his incapability. However, he observed that people with fewer capabilities were provided opportunity because of their higher social class.

However, Goudeau et al, (2021) presented that individuals facing social issue also focused on brining the positive change in society so that other did not go through the similar situation. In this context, Marcus has started a campaign for combating issue of chid hunger, racism and emphasis over development of children. He focused on providing 21 million meals to children and provided various voucher to children and family member for get accessing to required groceries. Moreover, he has also sponsored football training to poorer and deserving children so that growth opportunity could be provided to them. It has determined that Marcus Ranford has faced racism from its childhood and people usually discriminated him due to his skin colour. Moreover, he has faced huge racism due to missing final shootout leading to reducing his overall confidence. Additionally, he belong to lower income social class which results in creating issue in joining adequate football club and faced huge biasness while selecting in team. However, his hardworking, vigilant and consistent skill helps him in attaining his goals and overcoming all the issue.
