Assessment 002: E-portfolio

1.1: Introduction: Development of skills for professional and academic success

The main focus of this overall e-portfolio is to reflect on my professional, personal, and academic improvement in information and communication (ICT). This e-portfolio also reflects my all academic skills through the HSO4009 module. The capability to effectively communicate, work within academic frameworks, and use effective digital instruments is important for both a career in social and health care and my higher academic goals. I have achieved some important insights into my areas and strengths that require improvement through seminars, interactive learning, reflective activities, and independent tasks. This overall e-portfolio provides evidence of my development, my personal development plan, a SWOT analysis, and a self-evaluation, which aligns with Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle. At the start of my course, I was really unfamiliar with the important academic conventions, including how to utilise evidence appropriately, structure assignments, and use the referencing process. At the first stage, I initially found academic writing intimidating; usually, I depend on informational language and struggle hugely to write critically. However, I gradually improved my ability through tutorials, weekly workshops, and constructive feedback from my tutors. I initially utilise the academic frameworks such as PEEL (point, explanation, evidence, and link) to integrate sources and structure paragraphs.

I also enhance my research skills while improving my academic skills. I significantly learned how to identify dependable academic sources from books and journals, gather proper or relevant information to support my writing, and also utilize important keywords effectively. Overall, I also learned all types of referencing styles, which significantly helped me to properly understand the main importance of providing credit to others' works, and I also learned actively how to avoid plagiarism.

My ICT improvement has been significant. Generally, I also have a basic understanding and knowledge of PowerPoint and Microsoft Word, but I was not properly confident in implementing this in an academic context. Day by day, I become comfortable using Microsoft Word to easily format my assignments. Using Microsoft Word also helps me in learning to insert citations, apply headings, make a TOC, a list of tables, a list of figures and generate a reference list. In PowerPoint, I significantly learned how to make the creative and professional slides using theme, visual aids, and speaker notes to improve communication. I contend Moodle and LEA online, which help me in digitally literate learning and enable me to access, submit assignments, or track progress. I significantly started using Microsoft Teams and One Drive for collaborative learning.

Analysis

The approach also enhanced my professional skills, including punctuality and independent learning. I understood how to manage deadlines by breaking down tasks into smaller goals and using planners. These types of habits are transferable to professional training in social and health care, where communication, documentation and digital literacy are crucial.

1.3: Reflection

Here, Gibbs’ reflective model is used to reflect on the development of my ICT and academic skills throughout the module. It mainly comprises of six phrases description, feelings, evaluation, conclusion, analysis and action plan.

Description

In the beginning while entering the module I had no knowledge on the academic skills, especially critical thinking, about referencing and writing. I was also not confident on digital tools. One specific experience was making my PowerPoint for assignment 001. I lacked confidence in utilising speaker notes and visuals, and I bumbled to describe academic content clearly. I developed the skills through online courses and as per the daily feedbacks received from the mentor was able to complete tasks and developed my knowledge on digital tools also.

Feelings

During the project time, my feelings were anxious at the start, specifically about delivering in front of others. After that, I also felt motivated to enhance and accept any type of challenge seriously. After practice I got confident and improved my work and also got good feedback with improvement report from tutors. After detailed understanding and proper practice and support from mentor my skills developed and I could complete the work on time and with better efficiency.

Evaluation

I learned a lot through practice and feedback while the preparation procedures were demanding. I also realised that I was able to make a well-structured presentation and that visual aids improved my message. Workshops on referencing, problem solving skills, basic computer skills helped in improving my time management skills and improved my skills. Participation in group activities improved my skills on communication and resulted in overall development of academic work.

Analysis

This overall knowledge helps me to properly understand the main importance of simplicity, planning, and audience awareness. This also instructed me that I could transfer my written communication ability into a verbal format with preparation. My performance on academics got improved and I got more confident in research work started to develop in-depth and accurate assignments. Moodle and portal-based resources helped me in understanding how to use resources while writing on assignment and this improved my assignment writing skills more properly.

Conclusion

I still feel nervous regarding public speaking, but I now have more confidence in my ICT and presentation skills. I also realise that improvement comes through constructive criticism and practice. This e-portfolio allowed me to reflect significantly on my ICT and academic development. I have improved areas in writing, referencing, digital skills, and research, which are essential for success in both personal and professional lives. The identification of the strengths and weaknesses helps in proceeding with the next steps, making me feel confident about future challenges.
